  1. Explicit (adj) • Fully, clearly expressed; easy to understand • The teacher’s mood was explicit; she yelled and screamed, “I am so upset about your behavior for the substitute!”

  2. Implicit (adj) • The underlying meaning behind a statement, phrase, picture, or media. You have to figure it out on your own. What message is trying to be sent by a person’s actions or words? • We knew our teacher was upset about our behavior without her even saying a word; she curled her lip, her face got red, steam rolled out of her ears, and she scowled at each of us as we entered the room.

  3. Inference • An educated guess based on what you see and what you already know SITUATION: • You get off the bus from school and there’s an ambulance in your driveway. • What do you already know about ambulances? What can you infer?
