  2. All 5th graders in California should know: 5.4 Students understand the political, religious, social, and economic institutions that evolved in the colonial era. • 1. Understand the influence of location and physical setting on the founding of the original 13 colonies, and identify on a map the locations of the colonies.

  3. All 5th graders should know: (cont) • 2. Identify the major individuals and groups responsible for the founding of the various colonies and the reasons for their founding (e.g., John Smith, Virginia; Roger Williams, Rhode Island; William Penn, Pennsylvania; Lord Baltimore, Maryland; William Bradford, Plymouth; John Winthrop, Massachusetts). • 3. Describe the religious aspects of the earliest colonies (e.g., Puritanism in Massachusetts, Anglicanism in Virginia, Catholicism in Maryland, Quakerism in Pennsylvania).

  4. The 13 colonies include: • Virginia founded in 1607 by the London company. • In 1606, the London Company was given a permission by King James I to found colonies in America. The company was under the command of Capt. Christopher Newport , who founded (1607) Jamestown in Virginia. This was the first English settlement in the original 13 colonies of the new America!

  5. Massachusetts founded in 1620 by the Puritans. • Who came because of religious persecution.

  6. New Hampshire founded in 1623 John Wheelwright. • Wheelwright was born • in England in 1592 • Who later became a Puritan.

  7. Baltimore was knighted by King James in 1617. In 1619, he was commissioned one of the principal Secretaries of State. • Maryland was founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore. • Baltimore was knighted by King James in 1617. IN 1619 he was commissioned one of the principal Secretaries of State.

  8. Connecticut was founded in 1635 by Thomas Hooker. • Thomas Hooker was born into a PURITAN from England. When he came to Americans he became a talented preacher of the people.

  9. Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams.

  10. Delaware was founded in 1638 by peter Minuit and the new Sweden company.

  11. North Carolina was founded in 1653 by the Virginians.

  12. South Carolina was founded by Eight Nobles with a Royal Charter from Charles II in 1663.

  13. New Jersey was founded by Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret in 1664.

  14. In 1664, New York was founded by the Duke of York. The state gets its name from the Duke.

  15. Pennsylvania was founded in 1682 by William Penn. • Penn was a Quaker who was educated at one of the most prestigious colleges in the world, OXFORD. Remember Quaker Oats…

  16. Georgia was founded in 1732 by James Edward Oglethorpe. • Oglethorpe who was also from England.
