Projects and Contracts • Funding “committed” (at least advertised) • for 90% of projects • 95% of research funds ($115 million) • Contracts: • 55 active ($65 million) • 11 under negotiation ($50 million) • 4 completed • 2 projects in proposal preparation (S04A) or review (L05) stage • Reflects shift from start-up to management

  4. GAO Review • Required by SAFETEA-LU • assess the degree to which projects address topics in Special Report 260 • identify topics not yet addressed • recommend improvements • Conducted over summer • Met with Neil, Ann, each focus area leader • Met with FHWA, NHSTA, congressional staff • Report due to Congress Feb 2010

Mid-Course Navigation Check • Required by Neil for each focus area • Progress against research plans • Deliverables, products, outcomes • Coordination, communication, outreach, publications • General Observations (Ann’s): • Still focused on the strategic goals • Some delays, but all managed/manageable • Challenges: work load, articulating nature and benefits of the research results/products

  6. Highlights • Safety: field study about to begin; Secretary’s Distracted Driver Summit • Renewal: Webinars, workshops and symposia • Reliability: Capability Maturity Model • Capacity: release early version of CDMF, model development in Sacramento & Jacksonville
