Framework Project Examples • FP7: PlantCockpit - ICT FoF Funded project - Production Logistics and Sustainability Cockpit as the central environment for monitoring and control of all intra-logistical processes. Coordinated by SAP AG Germany, 15 partners including Intel Ireland • FP7: Bioelectric Surface - NMP Funded project - Developed technology both to combat MRSA and improve stent performance using surface charge. Coordinated by the University of Limerick’s MSSI – 12 partners including 4 Irish: Cook, Kerry SME & NUIG • FP5: Particulate Filters for Automotive Diesel engines: 90% of the cars on today’s market use these filters developed in a Framework 5 funded project (1999-2003) technology on the market 3 months after the completion of the project • The World Wide Web: (as we know it) CERN received EU funding in the early 1990s that contributed to the formation of W3C which evolved into the WWW

Framework Programme 7 (FP7) - European Funding for R&D • FP7 is the EU mechanism to fund collaborative ‘Research and Development’ work among entities in EU member states and beyond. • FP7 runs from 2007 – 2013, Budget is over €50 Billion & covers 4 Specific Programmes: 1. Cooperation (€32.4 Billion); 2. Ideas (€7.5 Billion); 3. People (€4.7 Billion); 4. Capacities (€4.2 Billion). • Universities, SMEs, MNCs, can participate in the different areas of the programme. • Funding rates for FP7 vary but, all in all, are the most generous of any R&D programme in the world. As a result – very competitive with an average Irish success rate of approx 23%. • Minimum 3 separate legal entities in 3 separate countries – Innovative Technology Development projects with a high EU/Global impact in typically a 1- 5 Year timeframe. • It is NOT short term Research/Consultancy and hence NOT for everyone

Framework Programme 7 – PPPs • €3.2billion has been committed from FP7 to a new EU initiative as the commission’s response to economic recovery – Aimed at some of the sectors worst affected by the global economic crisis – Private Public Partnerships from 2010-2013 • €1.2bn – Factories of the Future (Manufacturing) • €1.0bn – Energy Efficient Buildings (Construction) • €1.0bn – Green Cars (Automotive) • Collaborative projects run for 2-4 years depending of the programme. • Typical funding for industry partners from €100-400k; Typical number of partners 7-20 • SMEs and MNCs are an essential part of a consortium • Call 1 2009/2010 – Irish Industrial successes include: Kingspan, Crospon, Intel • Call 2 2010/2011 – Shannon Coiled Springs, Aerogen, Delap and Waller, Intel • Call 3 2011/2012 – Element 6, Boston Scientific, Delap and Waller, Thinksmart • Call 4 2012/2013- Call Published – July 2012, Deadline December 2012 • Orientation paper: http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/page/fp7_documentation

'Factories of the Future (FoF)' - Public-Private Partnership 2013 NMP topics • FoF.NMP.2013-1 Improved use of renewable resources at factory level • FoF.NMP.2013-2 Innovative re-use of modular equipment based on integrated factory design • FoF.NMP.2013-3 Workplaces of the future: the new people-centred production site • FoF.NMP.2013-4 Innovative methodologies addressing social sustainability in manufacturing • FoF.NMP.2013-5 Innovative design of personalised product-services and of their production processes based on collaborative environments • FoF.NMP.2013-6 Mini-factories for customised products using local flexible production • FoF.NMP.2013-7 New hybrid production systems in advanced factory environments based on new human-robot interactive cooperation • FoF.NMP.2013-8 Innovative strategies for renovation and repair in manufacturing systems • FoF.NMP.2013-9 Advanced concepts for technology-based business approaches addressing product-services and their manufacturing in globalised markets • FoF.NMP.2013-10 Manufacturing processes for products made of composites or engineered metallic materials • FoF.NMP.2013-11 Manufacturing of highly miniaturised components

NMP 2013: Selected 2 stage production topics – Stage 1 deadline November 2012 NMP.2013.3.0-1Tools for Monitoring and Assessing Resource-efficiency in the Value Chain of process Industries (Small/Medium) • Robust methodologies, models and tools will therefore be required, taking into consideration reuse and valorisation potential of resources along the value chain. The focus is on continuous processes, with a precise control of conditions, which also ensure product quality and safety of operation. NMP.2013.3.0-2 Integrated processing and Control Systems for Sustainable Production in Farms and Forests (SME) • The research should lead to an innovative model-based control of the crop- and/or forest-related economic processes. NMP.2013.4.0-1Graphene production technologies (Large) • Research proposals should focus on technological advancements for the development or up-scaling of production methods and techniques of single-layer or multilayer graphene, targeting high yield, homogeneity and reproducibility and low-cost.. One or more applications: lightweight composites, coatings, flexible and printed electronics, supercapacitors and flexible batteries, sensors, or lighting.

Why Bother? • Access to significant non-exchequer external funding to support R&D • Access to specific external expertise – nationally and internationally, complementary skills, tools, methodologies, and new targets technology watching brief and acquisition • Identification of new IP opportunities and consolidation of existing IP • Access to new (primarily EU) commercial  markets through building relationships with partners and potential customers • Prelude to recruiting additional internal resource and development of new directions • Fellowship training programmes for mobility and diversity goals • Benefits of involvement in large projects that could not be funded within any single country • Business Need • IP • Skills • And • Funding & Leverage

Example: INTEL • Strategic use of FP7: 51 proposals; 18 successes - 35% success rate • €7 million funding to Intel Ireland; 15 R&D staff allocated • ICT, Nanotech, eHealth, Manufacturing (energy) • Industry partners include Microsoft, SAP, Siemens, BMW, Telefonica, IBM, Sun Microsystems etc • Academic and research partners include LETI, IMEC, University of Cambridge etc • Working with TCD, UCD, WIT, Tyndall, Lake Comm.

Ireland and FP7 – the first 5/6 years… • Ireland has maintained a strong performance to date with participation AHEAD of national target ~1.49% Vs target of 1.25% of budget • €362M – >1000 successful applicants from ~5000 participations - success rate of ~23% • Approx €88M (24%) been secured by private industry with approx €66M to SMEs & €22M to MNCs • As economic conditions have deteriorated nationally (and internationally) -FP7 is an ideal opportunity as funding source with a 2012/2013 budget of €10bn • Last call before 2014 when Horizon2020 Commences
