Overview • School formed from Departments of Marine Technology and Marine Science • Created the largest and widest ranging marine academic unit in Europe • 50 teaching and research academics with 27 support staff • Based in three locations: Armstrong Building, Ridley Building, and Dove Marine Laboratory • Students: approx. 550 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students (includes students taught entirely in Singapore, and on the MTEC programme) School of Marine Science and Technology

Educational Future • Expanding our range of Masters programmes into interdisciplinary areas, exploiting the interfaces between science, technology, and enterprise • Embarking on a major international expansion of our educational provision delivering undergraduate programmes in Singapore School of Marine Science and Technology

Employment Activities • Careers Fair • Organised by School – Marine focus • 38 companies attend for 2 day event, with company stands and presentations • Recruiting for employment and summer placements • Engaging with companies for other initiatives: • Project collaboration • Scholarships and Bursaries School of Marine Science and Technology

Research • Principal sources of research funding are European Commission, National Research Councils & Industry • €2 million average annual funding Research Activities in Development: • Lloyd’s Register Centre for Sustainability and Availability (with OneNorthEast support) • Will employ 4 PhD and 4 RA initially • Industrial Doctoral Centre • with LR, UGS, UoS and UCL School of Marine Science and Technology

Key Personnel Melanie Landamore • Research Associate, & project manager for FP6 & FP7: CAREMAR, CREATE3S, AZIPILOT & PROMARC • Research Activities include: • Environmental sustainability of marine systems • Design & operation of autonomous craft for SAR and oceanographic research • Development & provision of CPD training in stability for AHTS vessel masters School of Marine Science and Technology

Key Personnel Richard Birmingham • Professor of Small Craft Design & Head of School of Marine Science and Technology • Research activities include: • Design methods • High speed vessels • Active roll stabilisation • Teaching responsibilities include: • Ship stability • Small Craft Design • Naval Architecture School of Marine Science and Technology
