Vehicles: 1,677,248 Drivers: 1,964,406 Inhabitants per vehicle: 2.6 SAFETY INDICATORS • 92,102 accidents (26,153 with victims) • 701 killed, 25,640 injured • fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants: 15.9 • fatalities per 100,000 vehicles: 43.8 • fatalities per 100 accidents: 2.68

ROAD SAFETY LEVEL ASSESSMENT IN CROATIA National Road Safety Program Objective: fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants: 8 (2010) IMPLEMENTATION STATUS • Substantial safety level increase • 2003 – negative indicators escalated • Main causal categories identificated : young driver population and alcohol • Intervention proposal through new Road Safety Act

GOAL AND PURPOSE • The connection of different motives of driving with the behaviour of the young drivers while driving and participation in a car accident • Proposal of measures that will contribute to the change of behaviour in young drivers while driving SAMPLE • DATA ABOUT CANDIDATES FROM HAK AND DRIVING SCHOOLS • AGE 18 - 24 • YEARS OF DRIVING FROM 0-3 YEARS • 117 DRIVING SCHOOLS IN REPUBLIC OF CROATIA (RoC) • 4329 YOUNG DRIVERS FROM 383 SETTLEMENTS IN RoC PROGRAM PACKAGE  Active Server Pages (ASP) technology  Microsoft Excel  Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)

CONCLUSION • some motives of driving are connected to the driver´s behaviour while driving, i.e. to the event of a car accident, • lack of driving experience, • the existing way of training drivers needs to be changed, • the key role of scientific research and education, • new technical-technological way of educating drivers.

  10. New ROAD SAFETY ACT (August 2004) • Age limit for driviving exam (18 years) – without waiting time for license • 0-level alcohol • Provisional two-year license for new drivers • Driving speed limitation; car engine power limitation (75 kW); time-term limitation (11 pm – 5 am) • Periodical test-training after-exam (by 2007) IMPLEMENTATION STATUS In comparison with analogue two-month period 2003: • 40% decreased fatality • 8% decreased accidents number
