  1. Todorov & Propp’s Theories of Film

  2. What is Todorov’s Theory? • Todorov theorises that all films have five stages to them. • He says that the stages are: • One: Equilibrium • Two: Disruption of Equilibrium • Three: Recognition of Disruption • Four: Attempt to repair/Undo disruption • Five: Beginning of a new equilibrium

  3. Proof that this theory works (using Kung Fu Panda): • The first film we have used to prove Todorov’s theory is ‘Kung Fu Panda’… • Stage 1: Furious Five are training, Po is in noodle shop. • 2: Po gets chosen as the Warrior. This shows that he has a purpose, or a challenge to overcome, such as defeating Tai Lung. • 3:This is realised and acknowledged when Tai lung escapes from maximum security prison following a vision of the future seen by Oogway. • 4: In an attempt to prepare for Tai Lung’s attack on the village, Po is Taught Kung Fu by Master Shifu, who eventually gains trust in him. Po gains the title of the Dragon Warrior and is granted the Scroll. • 5:When Tai Lung does arrive, a huge battle occurs between him and Po. After eventually defeating him, Po discovers the secret of the scroll and earns the trust of the town. There is now an equilibrium again. By Jovan

  4. Proof that this theory works (Using Toy Story) • Stage One: Everything is as it should be: Opening montage of Woody and Andy as Andy grows up. • Stage Two: Disruption of Equilibrium: Introduction of Buzz Lightyear at Andy’s birthday party. • Stage Three: Recognition of Disruption: Montage of Buzz replacing Woody as Andy’s favourite toy. • Stage Four: Attempt by Protagonist to Repair Disruption: Woody gets Buzz thrown away. This results in hilarious adventures together. • Stage Five: Beginning of New Equilibrium: Woody accepts Buzz and a beautiful friendship is born. By Archie

  5. Propp’s Theory: • His theory is that in every film there are a certain few characters that must be present. Those characters are as follows:
