  4. Blog of the Week “In a completely different and unrelated subject, I caught a glimpse of Keith Olberman's "Countdown" on MSNBC and one of the topics discussed was called "Blogging for health." In this story the headline is "Doctors encourage patients to write online blogs as a cure for comfort. It talks about how blogging is a way of online therapy and is suprisingly recommended by many doctors for their patients to participate in. In a recent America Online study, nearly half of all bloggers polled said blogging is a form of therapy for them. It is a way for patients to express their pain, suffering, and rejoice after being cured to millions of people possibly reading their blogs. Blogging is taking the world by storm from college students discussing the internet and its uses to patients in hospitals writing about their ordeals. Just another way that the internet is an extremely powerful tool utilized by millions throughout the world. In yet another more unrelated subject, what was up with your wonderful Boston Globe running Theo Epstein out of town. I don't know the behind the scenes reasons for his departure so maybe you may shed some light on this subject on class Wednesday night. Just another way the media plays a major influence in the lives of people. I am sure this will be discusses in class on wednesday with hopefully some answers regarding what went wrong. “

  5. Follow Up from Last Class “In the places they do serve, companies like BellSouth, Qwest, and the local phone companies are often essentially alone in the DSL or cable markets and charge fat, monopolistic fees. In Iowa, for instance, where Iowa Telecom has skimpy competition, users pay $169.95 for their monthly service, compared with a typical fee of $40 in New York City, where upward of six providers compete for high-speed customers. Half of rural households say they don't have high-speed Internet access because it's either unavailable or too expensive.” Source: Mother Jones, May-June 2005 v30 i3 p30(3)

Casinos • Casinos are open 24 hours a day • Entire cities are devoted to the gambling industry (Las Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City, etc.) • Pathways through a casino are built to emphasize the gambling equipment rather than directing visitors to exits. • There are generally no clocks or views to the outside, making it difficult for gamblers to know the time. • To further encourage unchecked gambling, casinos offer free alcoholic beverages to anyone who is gambling. 22. Tales from Addiction “My mother (67 years old) is so addicted to EQ that she spends hours upon hours playing it. Drives my father crazy. She is now going to a convention for EQ players, meeting up with game people from all over the country, and god knows what else. What is it about this game that makes people go over the edge of reality? She "loves" these people. She thinks she is needed by these people.” Source: Daedelus Project

  23. Tales of Addiction (cont.) “I continued to play because I was unhappy with the circumstances in my real life and needed to "forget" about it for as long as I could. I was having financial troubles and marital problems as well. I could ignore my real life and escape into EQ. This wasn’t for the fun, it was a "need" that I felt to not deal with my life responsibly and EQ was my chosen method of "drugging" myself into blissful ignorance.” Source: Daedelus Project

  24. China to unveil new online gaming standard that will favor Chinese- developed games. Shanghai. July 4. INTERFAX-CHINA - China will introduce a new national standard, by which online games are approved for distribution in the country, which focuses on supporting Chinese developed titles, the Ministry of Culture (MOC) said. The major emphasis of the new standard will be to foster the development of Chinese-developed online games so that in 3-5 years, Chinese developed titles dominate the domestic market, the MOC said. More detailed information about the new standard, however, will not be available until a final version is released. No timeframe has been given for when the final version of the standard might be introduced. In addition to favoring Chinese developed online games, the MOC said that the new standard would also look to introduce more advanced and higher-quality online gaming titles to the Chinese market. The new standard has also been designed to keep inappropriate online games out of the country. The new standard will also control the number of online games that are based primarily on combat and fighting, the MOC said.

  28. What is Podcasting? podcasting n. 1. Radio-style shows — some from major media, others from passionate individuals — delivered over the Internet to your computer. Unlike streaming audio, which requires you to listen in real time, podcasting lets you control how and when you hear your favorite shows.

  29. What is Streaming Media? streaming media n. 1. Media that is consumed (read, heard, viewed) while it is being delivered. Streaming is more a property of the delivery system than the media itself. The distinction is usually applied to media that is distributed over computer networks; most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (radio, television) or inherently non-streaming (books, video cassettes, audio CDs).
