  10. Meaning “If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses Sink me in the river at dawn Send me away with the words of a love song” These lines are describing what the writer wants in case she suddenly dies young. She is describing how she wants her funeral to go and how she wants to be sent off. This is the chorus of the song and the main focus.

  11. meaning “Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors Oh, and life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no Ain't even gray, but she buries her baby The sharp knife of a short life Well, I've had just enough time” In these lines the writer is describing how she wants her mother to know that she is safe in heaven and to let her know not to fear or mourn her. She also talks about how life can suddenly change. When someone dies before their parents it is known to be a tragedy. The writer uses a metaphor in the end to describe how a short life is like a sharp knife, it cuts deep. This line is seen many other times.

  12. meaning “And I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger I've never known the loving of a man But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand” In these lines the writer describes herself walking into heaven and how she is dressed and looks. She also talks of how she never knew what love was, she died to young. All she knew was what is felt to like someone but never made it past that.

  13. meaning “There's a boy here in town, says he'll love me forever Who would have thought forever could be severed by The sharp knife of a short life Well, I've had just enough time So put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls What I never did is done” Here the writer talks about the boy who promised to love her and they made plans but they never took in to account that something like death could stop that. Then she describes the funeral again by telling everyone to dress up because she will be. She talks about how time is done for her and she can not go back and do anything else that she might have wanted.

  14. meaning “A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell 'em for a dollar They're worth so much more after I'm a goner And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singing Funny, when you're dead how people start listening” These are the lines that mean most to me. Here the writer talks about how when you are alive no one really takes the time to listen to what you have to say but after you are gone your words mean so much more. This is true and we can see this in history. Many works of literature do not come to attention until after the author is dead and then it means nothing to them.

  15. meaning “The ballad of a dove Go with peace and love Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket Save them for a time when you're really gonna need them, oh” These last lines are just describing to how she died innocent and she doesn’t want you to mourn her because you will face bigger struggles in life.
