How the West was Fun** • As People begin to move west Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio become States • Further West, Spain and France fought for the Louisiana Territory • The Pacific and Oregon Territory was being explored by Spain, Russia, and Great Britain • As the west grew more important, issues along the Mississippi brought the US to the edge of war

  4. And THAT’S my final offer • After gaining control of France, Napoleon looks to colonize the Louisiana Territory • As the US grew closer to war Jefferson tried to buy the port of New Orleans from France • France countered by offering ALL of the Louisiana Territory, Which Jefferson accepted

But is it near a Major shopping center?? • Napoleon had many reasons to sell the Louisiana Territory • America’s determination to expand • The Slave Revolt in Haiti by Toussaint L’Ouverture • France needed money more than foreign land • Jefferson, who believed in a strict constitution could not turn down the territory and bought Louisiana Territory for 15 million dollars

The Real Golden Arch • Seeking to Learn about the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson Hired Lewis and Clark to explore the new land • Lewis and Clark, with Clark’s Slave York, began to explore the Territory and reached Saint Louis by Winter • St. Louis would become the Gateway to the west as the Louisiana Purchase became official

  7. River of Dreams • Lewis And Clark set out to explore the Missouri River to: • Find a water route around the country • Befriend Native Americans • Describe Plants, Animals, and the Landscaper • The Journey started slowly but by October the expedition made it to North Dakota

  8. Hitch Hikers?? Pick Em’ Up • In North Dakota Lewis And Clark befriended the Mandan tribe but angered British and French fur traders • When Lewis and Clark left the territory and headed west, they would be joined by Sacagawea who would further help their journey

Off Roading • When Lewis and Clark encountered the Great Falls of Missouri they had to set out on foot for 18 miles over a 2 week trek • Lewis and Clark would soon encounter the Rocky Mountains and the Shoshone people • In November of 1805 Lewis and Clark finished their journey reaching the Pacific ocean • Though a water route to the Pacific was NOT found valuable Information would be brought to the US government

Turn Pike • Zebulon Pike explored the Southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase and the Arkansas/Red Rivers • Pike would follow the Arkansas River seeing the Rocky Mountains from 150 feet away • Pike’s crew would follow he Arkansas river to the Rio Grande River into Spanish Territory and be arrested • Pike’s Crew would also bring Back valuable information to the US including descriptions of the Great Plains and Rio Grande River Valley

  11. Exploring a New World • Lewis and Clark and Pike would bring back ACCURATE maps of the Louisiana Territory • The Growth of Fur Trade brought more wealth and knowledge to the US • Pike misreported the Great Plains as a desert which dissuaded people from settling there
