Visual Literacy • Visual literacy is defined as the ability to understand and use images, including the ability to think, learn, and express oneself in terms of images (Braden, 1996) • To discuss issues and perspectives concerning visual communication (including definition of VL), the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) was established in New York State in 1968.

  12. ACE IT with PAT • ACE is the process of creating instructional visuals • Analyze • Create (PAT) • Perceptions (figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt) • Actions (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) • Tools (type, shape, color, depth, space) • Evaluate

(see slide 12) • PAT stands for Perceptions, Actions, and Tools • Perceptions include figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt • Actions include contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity • Tools include type, shape, color, depth, space
