  1. 1.1 Rectangular Coordinates

  2. Objective • Plot points in the Cartesian plane. • Identify the four quadrants.

  3. The Cartesian Plane • The Cartesian plane is formed by using two real number lines intersecting at right angles.

  4. The horizontal real number line is • the x-axis. • The vertical real number line is • the y-axis. • The point of intersection of these two axes • is the origin. • The two axes divide the plane into four parts called • Quadrants.

  5. II I III IV

  6. In the first quadrant, x > 0 and y > 0, xy > 0. • In the second quadrant, x < 0 and y > 0, xy < 0. In the third quadrant, x < 0 and y < 0, xy > 0. In the fourth quadrant, x > 0 and y < 0, xy < 0.

  7. On the coordinate plane below, graph A(0, 2), B(4, -3), C(-2, -1), D(2, 3), E(2, 0) and F(-5, 3)

  8. Determine the quadrants in which (x, y) is located so that the conditions are satisfied.
