  1. CLEARFuture Data Needs Trond Bøhler, Steinar Larssen, Leiv Håvard Slørdal and Sam-Erik Walker (Norwegian Institute for Air Research, NILU)

  2. Future data needs related to health relevant measurements and assessments • In the context of CLEAR, it is a strengthening requirement that our research is policy relevant. • Future focus will be on assessments of air pollution which is more relevant for assessment of the effects of the pollution, especially health effects (although also effects on ecosystems and cultural heritage). • This means that on the measurement data side, we must move closer to providing data which can be used to assess the exposure of the relevant compounds.

  3. Future measurement data needs related to population exposure assessments • Compounds of increasing importance:- PM fractions (e.g. PM1, PM0.1 and UFP)- PM fraction speciation: EC/OC, organic componds- Source specific tracers (e.g org. tracers like levoglucosan for wood burning, and NCBA for tire wear)- VOC and PAH speciation • Station location and network representativeness • Measurement uncertainty, linked to:- their representiveness for exposure of (a certain group of) the population- method accuracy (e.g. PM Correction Factors)

  4. Future data needs related to Air Quality Modelling • Improved characterization of indoor sources • Updated emission factors (for traffic and various other sources) for different compounds • Satellite data for characterization of surface conditions (snow-cover, vegetation, urban roughness etc.) • Quantification of uncertainty and representativeness of both modelled and observed emissions, meteorology and concentrations for use in assimilation applications • More detailed descriptions of population activity data and travel habits
