  1. The World’s Greatest Survival Story: Douglas MawsonAlone in the Artic

  2. The Summary • Douglas Mawson was an Australian Explorer who volunteered to travel and record his findings throughout the unknown and harsh artic. His team of 3 men were successful until one of the men fell into a crevasse, a hole in the ice, along with their best dogs and all of their supplies. Douglas and Mertz, his best companion, then attempted to make it back to his camp hundreds of miles away , but fell victim to all types of disease, including starvation and snow blindness. • The two were in constant pain and forced to kill and eat their dogs to survive. Eventually, Mertz lost his mind and had fits of madness, then died, leaving Mawson alone, for more than a month. He endured unimaginable temperatures, eroding of his body, dangling from cliff tops, and starvation, holding onto hope and faith in God, until he finally made it back, just a few hours after his boat left. He was forced to stay another winter at camp until he went home to his wife and country, a national hero.
