Why & How to Choose XLPE Power Cable

XLPE stands for cross-linked polyethylene. It is used in a range of applications — from pipe work, offshore oil transportation to cooling systems. Like other cross-linked synthetic materials, like EPR, it is now among the choice materials for cable insulation.

  1. Why & How to Choose XLPE Power Cable XLPE stands for cross-linked polyethylene. It is used in a range of applications — from pipe work, offshore oil transportation to cooling systems. Like other cross-linked synthetic materials, like EPR, it is now among the choice materials for cable insulation. XLPE power cable manufacturers today supply to a number of power installations. History XLPE has been around for some time. The first XLPE was obtained in 1930 when an electron beam was used to irradiate an extruded tube. However, this method remained too expensive to

  2. be used for wide-scale manufacturing till Engel cross-linking was developed in the 60s. Other more cost-effective process were devised and patented, making XLPE more and more common. Benefits: XLPE has the capability of withstanding wide voltage variations. It has a range of 600V to 35kV. This obviously means that it can carry large currents. Protection: XLPE is extremely effective in providing mechanical protection. XLPE cables do not need any metal jacketing. It can withstand extreme pressure, which makes it suitable for high-pressure installations. It is highly resistant to corrosion. It is not affected by moisture, temperatures changes and other corrosive elements in the atmosphere. This makes it ideal for installation in hostile conditions like outdoors or even underground. Thermal resistance: Because of cross-linking, the movement of molecules against each other is inhibited. This gives XLPE power cables excellent thermal resistance. It gives the XLPE higher current rating than PVC. This, in turn, means that the cables can be used in normal as well as short-circuit conditions.

  3. Less susceptibility to short circuit: Because of its thermal resistance, it is less susceptible to short circuit. This allows XLPE to carry high loads. Cost effective: XLPE power cable may seem expensive at its face value, but it is far more cost-effective than other alternatives. Its resistance to heat and extreme conditions means that it can be installed without damage and ensures its durability. In short, you get value for your money. Construction The construction followed by XLPE power cable manufacturers is similar to that of PVC. There are both single core as well as three core designs. However, there is a difference in the insulation. The thickness of the XLPE and its toughness means that it requires lesser insulation. One of its drawbacks is its susceptibility to electrical discharge, especially under high voltage (where it is frequently used). To counter this, some manufacturers use semiconducting screens over each insulated core and the conductor. The screen thin- layered screen is extruded during the insulation process, cross- linking it with the conductor to create a close bond. The same process is used when screening the core. The layer is usually composed of semiconducting paint which has a semiconducting tape covering it.

  4. Because of its many advantages, XLPE cables find many applications. It is often used for power stations. Its lightness and resistance to short-circuiting is a real advantage here. Its ability to be used underground also helps in power distribution systems. How to find a XLPE power cable manufacturer? Search online: A simple search will yield many manufacturers. You can also get on trade forums to look for manufacturers. You can also search according to your region. Once you have the list of manufacturers, go through the website. Most manufacturers will list their products, their specification and other details that you require. You can take a call based on this preliminary information. Budget: There are large scales as well as SME manufacturers in this sector. It means that you can get good amount of choices. But beware of choosing the lowest cost. Remember, you get what you pay for. Instead, do a survey of the current market prices and look for a manufacturer who will supply accordingly. Decide function: There are different constructions of XLPE cables and the suitable design depends on the function. So decide on the function before you decide on single or three-stranded core. Check for standards: Standards and certifications are created to ensure that there is a certain quality control and the products are safe to use. Keep in mind that your own certification depends on using certified parts.

  5. Conclusion With the use of XLPE cables increasing, XLPE power cable manufacturers are also seeing an increased demand pattern. XLPE’s superiority over other alternatives in withstanding extreme conditions makes it the preferred choice. Source:Why & How to Choose XLPE Power Cable
