  2. Arabian Tribes • To survive, Arabs organized into tribes. The leader of the tribe was called a SHEIKH. • Bedouins: were desert hearders that went to oasis to oasis. They lived in tents and ate dried fruits and nuts. • They rarely ate meat.

  3. Traveling together • Arabs would travel in groups to fend off attacks by the bedouins. • This is called a CARAVAN……. • Makkah also known as MECCA became the largest and richest of all towns.

  4. Mecca • Mecca is the holiest city in Arabia. • KAABA is • In the middle of Makkah or Mecca was a low square building surrounded by statues of gods and godesses.

  5. Arab Beliefs • They believed that the rock inside the Kabba was from heaven. • Arabs worshiped ALLAH

  6. Muhammad • Was an orphan raised by an uncle. • He went into the mountains to pray. • And Angel appeared to him and told him to preach islam and to surrender to the will of ALLAH • ALLAH IS THE ARABIC WORD FOR GOD

  7. Muhammad’s followers • Only Muhammad's family followed his belief at first. • Soon the poor started following him bc he believed the rich should share with the poor. • The rich and religious leaders didn’t believe his message and his followers began to get BEAT>>>>

  8. Muhammad leaves MECCA • He leaves Mecca with his followers and moves north to Yathrib. • The welcome him. The trip that they took north was called the Hijrah…. • Hijrah means “breaking off relations”

  9. Yathrib’s city • Yathribs city was renamed Madinah…Which means “the city of the Prophet” • Muhammad created an Islamic state: this is a government that uses its political power to uphold Islam.
