Let's Talk Sports!!! • How many sports can you name? • What makes the sports different from one another? • Are all of the sports played by everyone around the world? • If you are good at or enjoy a particular sport does it mean that you will be good at or enjoy all sports?

CLASSIFICATION Grouping things according to their similar characteristics Taxonomy: the science of classifying living things • Carolus Linnaeus (1700’s): • founded modern taxonomy • created binomial nomenclature= • two name system consisting of • Genus + species names
Binomial Nomenclature or Scientific Names Example- Lion Panthera leo or Panthera leo Human Homo sapien or Homo sapien Names have genus capitalized, species notcapitalized and both either in italics or underlined. Genus name is always first. Genus species Genus species
The more groups organisms have in common, the similar they are.
Other classification examples: • What is the scientific name of the American lobster? • In what phylum does the blue mussel belong ? • Which is more similar, the lobster and the market squid or the market squid and the blue mussel? Why? • Which two organisms are most closely related? Why?
All organisms are placed into one of six kingdoms: Archaebacteria Eubacteria Protista Fungi Plant Animal
