  1. National Heart Foundation of Australia The Charity for Life

  2. Why We Exist • A charity and the leading organisation in the fight against CVD which is; • Australia's main cause of death. • Responsible for almost 40% of all deaths. • Claims more than 1 in 3 people and affects every family. ...that’s more deaths than all cancers and traffic accidents combined. • NHFA is a federation of 8 state and territory offices and a national company . • We receive no core Government funding - reliant on charitable donations almost entirely - funded by public donations, corporate partnerships and gifts from wills.

  3. Our Vision • For Australians to have the best cardiovascular health in the world. Our Mission • To reduce suffering and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease in Australia.

  4. What we do... Research • Fund some of the best scientific and medical research from some the brightest and most innovative young scientists in Australia. • Fund researchers from some of the most prestigious research establishments Closing the Treatment Gap – Evidence into Practice • Develop peer reviewed, evidence based guidelines and policies for clinicians, medical and allied health professionals, eg RRIHD Guidelines, Guide to the Management of Hypertension, Management of Unstable Angina Guidelines • Work with Divisions of General Practice to improve community health

  5. What we do... Public Awareness and Programs • Nutrition - The 'Pick the Tick' program - making healthy food choices easy choices; Cookbooks “Deliciously Healthy”. • Physical Activity – Promote PA and advocate for environmental changes that support activity. • Tobacco Control - public education and advocacy initiatives with governments, NGOs and health organisations - ASH, Cancer Council, SIDS&KIDS, Asthma organisations etc • Heartline; Heartsite; literature distribution; donor and community activities

  6. How we fund it

  7. Contact Us…. • Heartline - 1300 36 27 87 - national information service for all heart health issues for the cost of a local call. • 80,000 calls a year • Over 1,000,000 resources distributed each year • Heartsite – www.heartfoundation.com.au • regularly rated top health information website by independent sources

  8. Research Program Funding outstanding cardiovascular research May 2005

  9. Heart Foundation Core Activities • Promoting and conducting research • Promoting and influencing behaviour which improves cardiovascular health

  10. Heart Foundation Research Program Our mission: To be the leading Australian advocate, supporter and champion of high quality cardiovascular research Our goal: To provide major advances in knowledge that will lead to improved cardiovascular health and better prevention and management of cardiovascular disorders

  11. Research in Review • The Heart Foundation Research Program undergoes independent evaluation every year. Findings include: • Heart Foundation research has achieved more visibility in peer-reviewed journals per $ expended on CV research than NHMRC. • There was a ~10% increase in total expenditure on CV research by the Heart Foundation and NHMRC in 2003. • The Heart Foundation is a leader in pro-actively establishing research funding relationships with other organisations. • There has been substantial improvement in communication with researchers. • The Research Program is managed in a cost-effective, ethical and transparent manner. Admin costs are exceptionally low.

  12. Heart Foundation Research Program We aim to: • Support the HIGHEST QUALITYresearch in the field of cardiovascular disease • Support more early-mid career researchers • Support people and projects • Support BIOMEDICAL, CLINICALandPUBLIC HEALTH research

  13. Research Definitions - Biomedical • Research with the goal of understanding normal and abnormal human functioning, at the molecular, cellular, organ system and whole body level. • May include studies on human subjects that do not have a diagnostic or therapeutic orientation • Associations between advanced glycation pathways and oxidative stress with early CVD in diabetic patients

  14. Research Definitions - Clinical • Research with the goal of improving the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease; improving the health and quality of life of individuals as they pass through normal life stages. • Research on or for the treatment of patients. • Preserved, long-term adaptations to home exercise training in heart failure patients.

  15. Research Definitions – Public Health • Research with the goal of improving the cardiovascular health of the Australian population or of defined sub-populations, through a better understanding of the ways in which social, cultural, environmental, occupational and economic factors determine health status. • Poor & Sedentary: Socioeconomic influences on women’s physical activity behaviours

  16. Research Funding Opportunities People Support • Career Development Fellowships • Overseas Fellowships • Post Doctoral Fellowships – biomedical, clinical, PH • Post Graduate Scholarships – biomedical, clinical, PH • Vacation Scholarships • Travel Grants Project Support • Grants-in-aid

  17. Funding Facts • To date $171 million has been spent on Research. • In 2006 the Heart Foundation (together with our external funding partners) is supporting $8.1 million in research projects, Fellowships and Scholarships across Australia. • In2006 48% was allocated to Fellowships & Scholarships.

  18. Postdoctoral Fellowships • Medical or science graduates (MD or PhD in last 4 years) seeking support to become independent researchers • Two years duration • Biomedical, Clinical & Public Health applications are ranked separately • Allowances: salary, institution on-costs, travel (upon application) • 0-2 years and 2-5 years postdoctoral are compared

  19. Overseas Fellowships • Opportunity to gain experience in overseas environment • At least 2 years’ research experience • Biomedical, Clinical & Public Health applications are invited but are assessed together • Two years overseas, one year in Australia • Allowances - cost of living; accommodation; travel to and from destination

  20. Assessment Criteria

  21. Career Development Fellowships • The Heart Foundation’s most prestigious award • High quality researchers with proven record of independent research, actively engaged in and significantly contributing to CVD research in Australia • For researchers approximately 4-10 years postdoctoral • 5 years duration • Includes Salary and Travel allowance • Not renewable, but Fellows can re-apply

  22. Assessment Criteria

  23. Postgraduate Scholarships • Medical or non-medical graduates • For full time study towards PhD, under supervision of a responsible investigator • Biomedical, clinical, public health applications are assessed separately • Maximum 3 years • Applicants should not hold other scholarship awards • Training opportunities • Other Scholarships: Nursing & Indigenous Health

  24. Assessment Criteria

  25. Media Training for Scholars • Free of charge • 1 day intensive training • Experience an actual interview with a TV journalist • Meet with Radio and Newspaper journalists • Learn how to write your own Media Release • Learn how to communicate your research in lay terms and in a media friendly context • Most scholars will have an opportunity to participate during their Award

  26. NHMRC Partnership Increase your chances…… • Postdoctoral Fellowships • Overseas Fellowships • Career Development Fellowships • Projects are not co-funded • Applicants must apply to NHMRC & NHFA to be eligible. • Keep in mind that NHMRC & NHFA closing dates differ. • Details can be found at: www.nhmrc.gov.au www.heartfoundation.com.au

  28. Grant Assessment Criteria From 2005 all NHFA Grants-in-aid were assessed using the NHMRC 7 category descriptor scale. The following criteria will be considered, giving approximately one-third weighting to each: Relevance - to the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of CVD. Merit – includes study design, methods and sustainability. Track Record – whether applicants and collaborators are thought to have the experience and expertise to carry out the project. 7 category descriptor scale

  39. Sources of NHFA research funding • Of the over $8.1 million being spent on research in 2006, • 83% came from bequests, donations and fundraising • 10% came from co-funding partners (eg NHMRC and Medical Research Institutes) • 7% came from industry partners, in particular the Heart Foundation Pharmaceutical Roundtable • A Strategic plan is in place for the further development of these invaluable partnerships with other organisations
