  2. The Definition of Glory (doxa) • 1. Δοξα =Brightness, splendor, radiance, etc. • 2. Δοξα =The majestic power of a king. Not only of an earthly king, but here it speaks of the Heavenly King, the Creator and Ruler of the Universe.

The Definition of Glory • Δοξα = the majesty, the holiness of Christ. • Ephesians 3:20, KJV, “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” • Colossians 1:11, KJV, “Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;”

  4. The Definition of Glory • 3. Δοξα =The wealth of a king. • Ephesians 1:18, KJV, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”

Δοξα =The justice and grace of a king. • Ephesians 1:6, KJV, “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” • In this case “glory” means magnificence, beauty, wonder, greatness, etc. • This is grace only a king can give. • Only a ruler, president, governor, or king can pardon a person of crimes. • In heaven only the King can pardon sins for eternity.

  6. The Definition of Glory • 5. Δοξα =Magnificence, splendor, beauty (as of a king), said of the fine clothing of a king. The beauty of Christ is greater than the glory of Solomon. • Matthew 12:42, KJV, “… and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.” • Matthew 6:29 KJV, “And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these [lilies of the field].”

  7. The Definition of Glory • 6. Δοξα =Fame, renown, honor. Δοξα = the honor, the honesty, and the holiness of God. • Romans 3:23 KJV, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” • Romans 5:2, KJV, “By whom [Jesus] also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

  8. The Definition of Glory • 7. Δοξαζω, doxadzo, = 1. to praise, to honor, to magnify. • 2. To clothe in splendor, to glorify. • 3. To bring into glory as a king, to crown as king. • 4. To respect, esteem, and obey. • The whole life of Jesus glorifies [Δοξαζω] the Father, John 8:54; 12:28; 13:31; 17:1, 4. • The Father glorifies the Son working miracles through Him, John 13:31f; 14:13; 17:1.

  9. The Definition of Glory (kabod) • כבוד, kabod, comes from “kabed,” “to be heavy.” Kabod[כבוד] means to be heavy laden with riches, power, or position. In LXX it was translated δοξαfor reputation or honor. • Kabod meant the light by which God revealed Himself, whether in lightening or in theophanies. • The glory, the kabod, was in the cloud, the Shekinah, over the temple.

The Lord of Glory • Both Paul and James call Jesus “the Lord of glory” which refers to the revelation of God as the Shekinah in the tabernacle, both in earth and in heaven. • “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory,”(1 Corinthians 2:8, KJV). • “My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons” (James 2:1, KJV).

The Lord of Glory • What glory would Christ have after His time on earth that He did not have during His earthly visit? • The praise of a redeemed people. • The sufferings of Christ ushered in His glory. • Therefore His suffering is called “glory.” “And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified,” John 12:23 KJV.

The Lord of Glory • Luke 24:26, KJV, [Jesus said] “Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?” • Jesus entered into His glory through suffering. • He has a glorious body. • Romans 8:18 KJV, “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

The Fire of God • The Fire of God Protected Israel and Led Them on Their Journey • The fire of God will also empower and protect His Church. • Exodus 13:21, KJV, “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire [אשׁ=esh] to give them light; to go by day and night:”

The Fire of God • Exodus 13:22, KJV, “He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.” • Exodus 14:19, KJV, “And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:” • Exodus 14:24, KJV, “And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,”

Call Joshua, and present yourselves at the tabernacle of the congregation, and I shall charge him. And Moses and Joshua went, and they presented themselves at the tabernacle of the congregation.” • 15. “And Jehovah appeared at the tabernacle in a pillar of cloud; and the pillar of cloud stood at the door of the tabernacle.”

The Fire of God • The Fire of God Sanctified the Tabernacle • Exodus 29:43, KJV, “And there [at the door of the tabernacle] I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory.” • Exodus 40:34, KJV, “Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”

The Fire of God • Exodus 40:35, KJV, “And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” • Leviticus 9:23, KJV, “And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people.”

The Fire of God • The Tabernacle and the Temple Were the Dwelling Place of the glory of God. • Revelation 15:8, KJV, “And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.”

The Fire of God • The Fire of God consumed the sacrifices • When God sent His fire from heaven to the altar of Israel, it was never to go out. • Leviticus 6:8-9, 12-13, LITV • 8. “And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,” • 9. “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering; it is the burnt offering because it is burned on the altar all the night until the morning, and the fire of the altar is kept burning on it.”

  20. The Fire of God • Leviticus 6:12-13 • 12. “And the fuel on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it morning by morning. And he shall lay the burnt offering in order on it. And he shall burn it as incense with the fat of the peace offering.” • 13. “Fire shall be continually burning on the altar; it shall never go out.”

And they came out and blessed the people; and the glory of Jehovah appeared to all the people.”

  22. The Fire of God • Leviticus 9:24. “And fire came out from before Jehovah and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. And all the people saw, and cried aloud, and fell on their faces.” • God judged Nadab and Abihu for offering strange fire on His altar, Leviticus 10.

The Fire of God • The Fire of God Brought Order in Israel • Numbers 12:5, KJV, “And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.” • Numbers 14:10, KJV, “But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.”

The Fire of God • Numbers 14:14, KJV, “And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.”
