  1. House of the scorpion Book by Nancy farmerpower point by Todd Champeauxperiod 1

  2. Setting • Not too distant future • Set in Opium, a small country in the American Southwest.

  3. Matt • Protagonist • El Patron’s clone, so he has a tattoo on his foot that says “Property of AlcartanEstates” • In the beginning of the book he was very young, only 4 or 5, at the end of the book he is older, 14 or 15 • Very resourceful from a young age • Incredibly talented at playing piano

  4. El patron • Antagonist • Ruler of Opium • Drug Lord • Created Matt as a clone so he could use Matt as an organ donor • Is 148 years old • Very possessive of what he owns

  5. Conflicts Society doesn't accept clones as humans, so when clones are created they kill their intelligence. Matt is abused for being a clone, even though El Patron spared Matt’s intelligence.

  6. Theme No matter where you come from, or what your race is, you should be treated as an equal.

  7. Rating and Review • The book had an engaging storyline • Excellent use of the dystopian time set • Occasionally got a bit slow
