The Criterion • The Criterion is a non-governmental, non profit, faith based Women organization in Business and the Professions. • It was registered with the Corporate affairs commission in May 2004( Reg. No. 16,976) • It is a national organization with active districts in Abuja, Lagos, Kwara, Osun and Oyo states • The Criterion has a Board of Trustees and Executive Committees at the National and State levels

  3. Mission • We are a Muslim Women organization passionate about the welfare of women and children.

  4. Vision • To be the foremost faith-based Women organization committed to all round societal development

  5. Core Values Our Core values are: • Integrity • Empathy • Competence

  6. Core Focus The major focus of activities of The Criterion are: • Education • Reproductive Health • Economic Empowerment

Core Focus objectives Education • To encourage all round education both in the mundane and religious matters • Advocate improve budgetary allocation for education by government at all levels • Encourage girl child education • Adult education for illiterate women • Remedial and vocational education • Scholarship for deserving students • Promote sound knowledge and understanding of the religion of Islam through seminars, workshops, neighborhood daawah • Encourage members to learn reading the Qur’an and hadith • Promote peaceful co-existence between Muslims and other faithful • Collaborate with other organizations with similar values and objectives

Reproductive health-Core objectives • Strong advocacy towards govt giving priority to maternal and child health • Mobilize women on the need to ensure healthy living within the family • Encourage pregnant women to seek for antenatal care • Mobilize women on prevention of common endemic diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis • Educate women on sanctity of life thereby discouraging abortion • Create awareness on the risk for breast and cervical cancer and the need for early detection to reduce mortality and morbidity • Encourage young girls to study medicine, nursing and other medical courses in order to increase man-power in this sector. • Special programmes to prevent vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) and to take care of victims • Promote awareness on prevention of HIV and viral hepatitis both of which can be transmitted from mother to child

Socio-economic empowerment • Encourage women to partake in decision making process in the immediate community • Influence the authority to include women in positions of authority • Set up own NGO to alleviate poverty in women • Promote entrepreneurship among women • Facilitate access to soft loans from financial institutions • Set up own vocational training centers for capacity building women and youths • Organize workshop to train the trainers

Programme -National • Coordinate activities of the districts • Formulate policy & programmes and review when necessary • Organize bi-annual National conference • Leadership training workshop • Set up a standard Muslim secondary school with boarding facilities • Liaise with Federal govt and other NGOs

Programmes-District • Organize monthly lecture-lecture based on Qur’an & hadith, pick & talk, health talk • Public Seminar (twice or quarterly) • Prison visit • Neighbourhood daawah • Teen club/maiden in paradise • Hospital visit • Vacation program for youths • Joint Usrahs • Marriage counselling unit • Liaise with govt and other NGOs

  15. Govt/media penetration strategy • Courtesy visit to govt. officials, political leaders & editors of major newspapers • Ameerah should be in touch with all the editors of major newspaper • Press releases on contemporary issues • Hosting of media practitioners • Press conference

  16. FUNDING Challenges/weakness • The Criterion levies and donations which are the major sources of income are meager • New programmes now Capital Intensive

Strategies to improved funding • To intensify effort in the collection of membership levies and subscriptions at district level. • Working in collaboration with the following ministries: • Ministry of Youth and Sports • Ministry of Women Affairs • Ministry of Health both state and federal • Agencies in charge of poverty alleviation e.g. NAPEP • Multinational Companies. E.g MTN, ZAIN,MOBIL • Local, National and International NGOs • Pay courtesy call to women in government and legislative houses • To apply for monitoring at national programs e.g. election, immunization.
