  3. Software Instructions that tell hardware what tasks to do and how to perform tasks Hardware Electronic and mechanical equipment • Input devices are parts of hardware

  4. Input Input what? 5. Input how?

  6. Input Hardware components used to enter data and instructions into a computer What are Input Devices? voice input video input keyboard scanners and reading devices pointing device digital camera

  7. The Keyboard (text, numbers, instructions) • How is the keyboard organized? • Typing area • Numeric keypad • Function keys • Special keys

  8. Most desktop computer keyboards have…

  9. The insertion point, also known as the cursor, is a symbol on the screen that indicates where the next character you type will appear

  10. How a keyboard is connected ?

  11. What is awireless keyboard? • Communicates with a receiver attached to a port on the system unit • Radio waves or infrared waves are used to deliver signals

  12. What is aportable keyboard? • A portable keyboard is a full-sized keyboard you attach to and remove from PDA

  13. What is avirtualkeyboard? A virtual keyboard is a software and/or hardware component that allows a user to enter characters On-screen virtual keyboard

  14. An ergonomic keyboard has a design that reduces the chance of wrist and hand injuries • Ergonomics incorporates comfort, efficiency, and safety into the design of the workplace

  15. The Keyboard for mobile devices • Keyboards on mobile devices typically are smaller and/or have fewer keys • Some phones have predictive text input, which saves time when entering text using the phone’s keypad

  16. Pointing Devices

  17. Mouse • A mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably. Can be wired or wireless

  18. Double-click Right-click Right-drag • Common mouse operations Point Click Drag Rotate wheel

  19. What is anoptical mouse? • No moving mechanical parts inside • Senses light to detect mouse’s movement • More precise than mechanical mouse • Connects using a cable, or wireless

  20. What is atrackball? • Stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side • To move pointer, rotate ball with thumb, fingers, or palm of your hand

  21. Touchpadand apointing stick • Touchpadis small, flat, rectangular pointing device sensitive to motion • Pointing stickis pointing device shaped like pencil eraser positioned between keys on keyboard • sensitive to pressure

  22. Touch-sensitive areas of screen • What is atouch screen? • Often used with kiosks

  23. Handheld input device that can emits light • Press light pen against screen surface and then press button on pen • What is alight pen? It allows the user to point to displayed objects, or draw on the screen

  24. Looks like a ballpoint pen, but uses pressure to write text and draw lines • Digital pen (text, numbers, graphics, instructions) • Used withtablet PCs

  25. Microsoft Surface

  26. What is atouch-sensitive pad? • Input device on a portable media player that enables users to scroll through and play music, view pictures, watch videos or movies, adjust volume, and customize settings

  27. Other Input for Smart Phones

  28. Insertion point: blinking vertical bar that indicates where next character you type will display • Mouse pointer: pixel on the screen pointed by the mouse

  29. Scanning and Reading Flatbed Pen or Handheld Sheet-fed Drum • What is ascanner? • Light-sensing device that reads printed text and graphics • Used for image processing, converting paper documents into electronic images

  30. Step 1: Place the document to be scanned face down on the glass window. Using buttons on the scanner or the scanner program, start the scanning process. Step 2: The scanner converts the document content to digital information, which is transmitted through the cable to the memory of the computer. Step 3: Once in the memory of the computer, users can save it as a file, display the image, print it, e-mail it, include it in a document, or place it on a Web page. • How does aflatbed scannerwork?

  31. Device that uses light source to read characters, marks, and codes and then converts them into digital data • What is anoptical reader? • Optical character recognition(OCR) reads characters in OCR font • Optical mark recognition(OMR) reads hand-drawn pencil marks, such as small circles

  32. What is aturnaround document? • Document that you return to the company that sent it • Portion you return has information printed in OCR characters

  33. What is adata collection device? • Obtains data directly at location where transaction or event takes place • Transmits data over network or Internet

  34. Data collection • devices are used in: • Restaurants • Grocery stores • Factories • Warehouses • The outdoors

  35. Identification code that consists of a set of vertical lines and spaces of different widths • UniversalProductCode(UPC) • What is abar code?

  36. Uses laser beams to read bar codes • What is abar code reader?

  37. What is amagnetic-ink character recognition (MICR) reader? • Can read text printed with magnetized ink • Banking industry uses MICR for check processing

  38. Magnetic stripe card reader • reads the magnetic stripe • on the back of cards such as: • Warning: Exposure to a magnetic field can erase the contents of a card’s magnetic stripe

  39. RFID • RFID (radio frequency identification) uses radio signals to communicate with a tag placed in or attached to an object • The tag can be smaller than a grain of sand. • They can be read (both the information on the tag and the location of the tag) at a distance by an RFID reader.

  40. The tag can be implanted into a thing or being with or without persons knowledge. • RFID can track:

  41. RFID • Reads information on the tag via radio waves • Can be handheld devices or mounted in a stationary object

  42. Audio Input • is the process of entering any sound into the computer

  43. How it functions? • Electric waves created by a microphone go to the sound card in the System Unit • Sound card converts them to digital form (analog to digital conversion – ADC) • In the digital form sounds live in the computer • After conversion from digital to analog they come to output devices – speakers

  44. Voice Input and Voice Recognition • Voice inputis the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone • Voice recognitionis the computer’s capability of distinguishing spoken words

  45. Music production device and software • allows users to record, compose, mix, and edit music and sounds

  46. Images input • Process of entering pictures, figures, symbols into computer • Digital cameras, scanners allow us to input images

  47. Digital Cameras • Allow the user • To take digital pictures • To download images to a computer • To post pictures to the Web • Images are viewable immediately on thecamera screen

  48. How a digital camera works?
