  2. Feminist Art in 1970’s • Feminist Art criticised the gender roles and identities of the early 20th century and prior. It emerged in the late 1960s amidst the build up of anti-war demonstrations as well as civil and queer rights movements. Art was used to create a dialogue between the artist and the viewer, tackling stigmas and taboos. Art was not merely an object for aesthetic admiration, but could also incite the viewer to question the social and political landscape, and through this questioning, possibly affect the world and incite change toward equality. Artist Suzanne Lacy declared, the goal of Feminist art was to "influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes” • Before feminism, the majority of women artists were denied exhibitions and gallery representation based on the sole fact of their gender. Feminist artists created alternative venues as well as worked to change established institutions' policies to promote women artists' visibility within the art world. • The feminist art movement was the second wave of the feminist movement. The "first wave" of feminism began in the mid-nineteenth century with the women's suffrage movements and continued until women received the vote, shortly after the end of World War I.

  8. Throughout the period 1973 - 1980 Cosey was exhibiting, contributing to mail art exhibitions and performing in other group exhibitions around the world. Often working naked in her performances, Cosey went on to investigate self-image within the context of sex magazines and sex films, glamour modelling and striptease acts. Her experiences within these industries during the period 1973 - 1984 were brought into her art work as she explored the many aspects of sex as it is perceived and transacted as commercial product. She placed conventional beauty in a situation where it was subjected to simulated mutilation before a live audience. This provided a visual contrast highlighting and questioning the notion of what is presentable as 'beauty'.
