Progress made • New data sources in the collection and compilation of statistics: • Azerbaijan (only on hazardous waste), Kyrgyzstan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine • Changes in methodology of collecting and producing data: • Azerbaijan (only on hazardous waste), Belarus (only on waste management), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine • Sufficient waste data coverage (all sectors of economic activities covered, all municipalities covered, etc.): • Only Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan • New resources for dissemination of statistics: • Kazakhstan (future plans of electronic database), Republic of Moldova (new database on the website), Russian Federation (booklets and informational graphs)

Progress made • Improvement plan for data processing methodologies and/or data validation techniques: • Implementation of electronic form of reporting (or information system) – Belarus, Georgia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Republic of Moldova and Serbia • Implementation of new methodologies after adoption of new legislation – Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine • Methodology to collect data on hazardous municipal waste – Azerbaijan • Methodology to collect data on hazardous waste – Tajikistan • General update of the methodology and terminology – Kyrgyzstan • Develop conversion rate of measurements – Azerbaijan • Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan did not provide the survey on progress

Main problems and challenges • The reliability and accuracy of the reported data: • Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova • Low rate of responses, non-responsive enterprises: • Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia • Incomplete reporting and the coverage of data: • Belarus (household municipal waste), Republic of Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation (rural area and private houses coverage) • Capacity of enterprises and statistical office to report and collect data on waste: • Tajikistan, Ukraine • Lack of national classification of waste: • Georgia, Tajikistan

  5. Future priority areas in the field of waste statistics • Specific field of waste statistics such as landfill statistics and household waste statistics: • Armenia (landfill), Azerbaijan (household) • Harmonization with the methodology used by International Organizations (IO) and EU: • Belarus (with IO), Republic of Moldova (with EU) • Expanding the coverage of economic activities: • Belarus, Russian Federation (to cover rural area)

  6. Future priority areas in the field of waste statistics • The whole or major part of field of waste statistics: • The whole: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan; The Major: Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia • Changes and amendments in waste legislation: • Ukraine • Decrease the waste generation and better treatment of the waste generated: • Kazakhstan
