  2. Agenda • Aquaquick Team • Motivation • - Need for product • - Product Overview • Market and Competition • Inner Workings • - Energy Generation • - Filtration Process • Product Testing • Project Specifics • - Team Dynamics • - Finances and Timeline • Looking Back and Thinking Ahead • What we learnt from this experience • Future improvements • Conclusion • Acknowledgements & References • Questions & Demo www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  3. AquaQuick Team Vaibhav Mal – President and Chief Executive Officer Concept and team dynamics Shivam Mathur – Chief Technical Officer R&D UV Technology and Implantation Jie Gu – Chief Financial Officer R&D Finances and Mechanical building Adam Tanabouz – Mechanical Lead R&D Mechanical and Electrical Building www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  4. Motivation • Need for the product • What problem is it addressing • Earth – Two third water • Human Body – Approx 70% water • 1.5 billion people without regular access to water • 4 Million deaths annually • People walk an Average of 3.7 miles and spend 16 hours a week (2 hours a day) • Product Overview www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  5. Market and Competition • Filtering Products • Many available • None reusable, self sustaining and durable • Other Methods • Iodine tablets • Battery powered filters • Charcoal filters • Hand crank • Cannot be used on the go www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  6. Energy Generation Txt • DC voltage generator to charge a battery. • Ultraviolet bulbs that work at 12 V DC and have the required specification to kill bacteria. www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  7. Current range Calculation RPM of the cart’s speed • 47 cm diameter wheel and a stop watch, it was found equal to 40 RPM • 47 RPM = 50 to 80 Watt for one hour • Maximum current rating = 70 Watt /12 V= 5.8 A • Nominal operating current = 40 Watt /12 V= 3.3 A • 40 RPM x wheel’s circumference = 59.2 meter per minutes. So, 3.55 KM in one hour.

  8. The generator • RPM generator- Current higher than the calculated currents. • Permanent magnet DC motor from used car or appliance is powerful and cheap • Wiper Motor from used vista eagle car 1992 model • 80 watt 12 VDC 6.7 A • The generation of 13 VDC to 14 VDC was easy at low RPM that was calculated using stop watch. It was found Equal to 50 RPM

  9. Gear Module • Generator rotates in one direction, so gear module rotates in one direction. • The gear ratio needed = The generator’s RPM/ The wheel’s • RPM= 50/40= 1.25. • Rotation are transferred by chain

  10. The circuit • The battery and the generator are connected in parallel • Current flows from generator to the battery when the generated voltage is larger than the voltage of the battery. The Circuit

  11. Filtering Process • Our Objective • Get same results as boiling • Micro-organisms • Chemicals • Particles • Filtering techniques we used • Mesh Filtering • UV Filtering • Sun Filtering www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  12. Filtering Process • Mesh Filtering • 20 micron Sediment Filter • Reduces amount of sand, • silt, dirt, and other particles. • Two Layers www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  13. Filtering Process • UV filtering • UV-C Short wave- 100-280 nm • UV Lamps • Alter DNA of viruses, bacteria • molds and parasites • No chemicals added • Class A and B www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  14. Filtering Process • Sun Filtering • UV-A Long wave- 315-400 nm • (PET) Polyethylene terephthalate • Deactivates diarrhea-causing • organisms in polluted drinking water[2] • Cumulative solar energy • Aluminum – 75% UV Reflectivity[1] www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  15. Combined System • Working together • Simultaneous charging and lighting • Water movement • Other components • UV Lamps case • Battery/Generator Cabinet • Water Tap • Reversible movement • UV lamp switch and generator switch • Mesh filter container www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  16. Lifetime • UV Lamps • - 8000 burning hours[7] (2hrs/day = 730hrs) • - Recommended replacement - Annual • - Contact retailers • Battery • Generator • Mesh Filter • - 6 months life[8] • Four replacement papers provided • Other parts • - Contact retailers www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  17. Testing www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  18. Testing Steps • Pour the water getting from SFU pond on the mesh filter and exposure it under UV for 10 minutes • Prepare 2 water samples (one is from SFU pond , one is after treated) • Culture Bacteria: • Mix the agar and pour it into the dish to cover the bottom • Pour 1 ml sample water on the agar • Set the dish in a warm dark cupboard for two to three days • Observe the bacteria colonies through the top of the dish www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  19. Testing Result (Untreated) www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  20. Testing Result (Dilute Untreated Water) Total Colonies: 40 * 1000 = 40,000 per 1ML www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  21. Testing Result (Treated) After treatment from aquaQuick, there are only 5 colonies! 99.9875% bacteria have been killed www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  22. Testing Result (Compare) SteriPEN Kills over 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, and it gets WQA approved. [4] www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  23. Team Dynamics (Teamwork) Work Together Share Ideas & Democratic Process www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  24. Team Dynamics(Individual Work) www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  25. Finances www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  26. Timeline www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  27. Future Improvements • Add Quartz around the UV tube • Integrating Active Carbon Filtration • Aluminum Mirror (200nm-10µm)[3] • Replaceable UV Tubes • Stronger Parts of Cart • Indicator for Bulb Replacement • Indicator for Water Quality • Automatically Switch [6] [5] www.aquaquick.ueuo.com

  28. Conclusion • What do we take away from an experience like this? • Mechanical skill and respect for tradesmen • A lot of knowledge about Microbiology • Great friendships and memories www.aquaquick.ueuo.com
