Discovery Room The “Big Picture” • A room where kids can play and explore beyond what they do in the classroom. • Science and Engineering Focus • Engineering/Invention • Earth and Space Science: e.g. Geology, Paleontology, Archeology, Meteorology, Astronomy • Physical Science: e.g. Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Chemistry, Physics • Life Science: e.g. Biology, Botany, Zoology, Ecology • SUSTAINABILITY? HEALTH? NUTRITION? • Linked, but not tied, to Kyrene Science curriculum • Staffed by parent volunteers, ASU pre-service teachers, and ASU Interns.

Discovery RoomASU and Parent Volunteers • First 3 weeks, Aug 19 – Sep 9, Parent Guest Stars: My Plate, Take Apart, OPEN PLAY • ASU pre-service teachers coming to observe(?) • 3-5 parent volunteers per day (3 at least) • Remaining semester roughly divided into 2-3 week rotating themes (unless...) • Teachers present thematic mini-lessons (8-15 minutes) • Student participation is OPTIONAL, but incentives will be given to encourage participation (see certificate). • Parent Volunteers can encourage participation but also supervise/play with kids in the rest of the room

  8. Discovery RoomLogistics Availability to students • During lunch-recess based on a rotating pass-system. • All students rotate through the first cycle. After that students can “pass” on a pass! • Volunteers’ kids get “special passes” • Adults visiting for lunch count as a pass! (be sure they check in! • K and 1st are picked up by a volunteer at the MPR • Students “check-in” at the attendance table outside the room and are dismissed to their classrooms (EXCEPTION: KINDERGARTEN)

Discovery RoomLogistics • 24-30 students per 20 minute period • Mondays and Wednesdays 11:15am-12:45pm • 11:15-11:30 set up (parent volunteers) • 4th grade 11:30-11:50 • 2nd grade 11:50-12:10 • 1st grade 12:10-12:30 • 12:30-12:45pm clean-up and close-down (parent volunteers) • Tuesdays and Fridays 11:05-12:35 • 11:05-11:20 set up (parent volunteers) • Kindergarten 11:20-11:40 • 3rd 11:40-12:00 • 5thgrade 12:00-12:20 • 12:20-12:35 clean-up and close-down (parent volunteers)

Discovery RoomStudent Expectations • Students “sign their face” & drop passes into plastic bin at attendance table as they enter. • Students remain with the room unless bathroom or nurse is needed • Use restrooms in classroom across the hall. • K-2 students should go with a DR volunteer. 3-5 can go by themselves but a volunteer should “keep and eye out.” • Classroom (as opposed to playground) behavior is expected • Indoor voices • No running, throwing, etc. • Respect other people and their work • Students can use anything out in the open. • Items in cubbies, cabinets, drawers or under the tables are off limits. EXCEPTION: Top “critter” drawers by microscopes OK) • Only 4-6 people at a station at one time. Adults will help them rotate • All room contents remain with the room. EXCEPTION: Invention bin recyclables and scientist cards. • Students are expected to clean up (the last 2-5 minutes)

Discovery RoomParent Volunteer Procedures • Sign in at office, put on badge • 15 min. prior to first group visit (11:15 on Mondays, Wednesdays, 11:05 on Tuesdays, Fridays), set up • One volunteer per shift needs to : • Collect passes and kids from MPR • Take attendance • Accompany Ks back to class • Set timer for 15 minutes at start of each 20-min. grade visit • Allow the last 2-5 minute of visit for clean-up (Ks need 5, 5s need 2) • After last group leaves (12:30 Mon/Wed, 12:20 Tues/ Fri): • Clean-up anything remaining (wipe down as needed) • Make any necessary notes on shortages, broken items, purchase needs, problems, any other comments • Turn off electric/battery-powered items, turn off lights • Return passes to teachers’ mailboxes • IF YOU CAN’T MAKE YOUR SHIFT , as early as possible, please contact Marni at 480-540-4599; or the Cielo Office at 480-541-2400. Discovery RoomVolunteer Roles • Help set-up and clean-up • Help kids track their attendance on attendance picture sheets • Monitor behavior, address problems, mediate conflicts, change batteries, etc. • Highlight opportunities, provide demonstrations • Encourage kids to rotate as necessary to enable everyone to try their favorite activity • Actively engage with the kids: PLAY!!!!! This is recess! • Monitor the time, ensure a clean-up period (last 2- 5 minutes) and send the kids back on time ENJOY YOURSELF! If the kids see you engaged and enjoying the room, they’ll take your cue.

Discovery RoomKid Tips • What do I do with these kids? • Join them in their play • Ask them questions about their play • What do you have happening here? • What do you think will happen next? • TELL ME (MORE) ABOUT IT • Ask them about the items on the tables • Does anyone know what this is/does? • How do you know that? • Can you show me? • What do you think would happen if we ______? • Point out the challenge cards • What is this talking about? What does it mean? • What makes you think so? • Kid misconceptions? Question them out of them if you can

Discovery RoomResources • On-Line - We will have volunteers regularly researching resources for us this year, such as: • Kyrene School District Educational Resources: http://sw.kyrene.org/Page/5262 • Kahn Academy: http://www.khanacademy.org/ • Bill Nye:http://www.billnye.com/for-kids-teachers/printable-one-sheets-for-teachers/ • NASA website • International Observe The MoonNight, etc • In the DR: • ASU Cupboard – teacher manuals, student books etc. • All the DR cupboards – Rummage Rummage Rummage! • Challenge Cards at the stations • Scientist Fun Cards!
