  2. FREE DROP • If a ball comes to rest in a place that is beyond your control. You may play the ball where it lies or seek relief, also known as a “free drop”. • To execute a free drop, you must stand outside the trouble area, extend your arm straight out, and drop the ball. The drop should allow you an unobstructed swing.

  3. FREE DROP - GROUND UNDER REPAIR • Usually marked by a sign or white paint

  4. FREE DROP - MAN-MADE OBJECTS • Paved cart path • Sprinkler heads • Metal grates

  5. FREE DROP - HOLES MADE BY ANIMALS

  6. FREE DROP – CASUAL WATER • Puddles left by rain or sprinklers

  7. FREE DROP – STAKED TREES OR SHRUBS • Similar to the man made objects rule

  8. ONE STROKE PENALTIES • In some situations a player will incur a one stroke penalty. • In this case, the player will add one stroke to his/her score.

  9. ONE STROKE PENALTIESLost Ball • You have five minutes to locate your ball. • You must strike the ball from the previous spot.

  10. ONE STROKE PENALTIESOut of Bounds • Ball goes past the white stakes on the perimeter of the course. • You must strike the ball from the previous spot.

  11. ONE STROKE PENALTIESDirect Water Hazard • Water hazard marked by yellow stakes. • A player has three options: 1. play ball as it lies, no penalty.* 2. replay ball from previous spot, with the one shot penalty. 3. drop ball from entry point, with the one shot penalty.

ONE STROKE PENALTIESLateral Water Hazard • Water hazard marked by red stakes. • A player has four options: 1. play ball as it lies, no penalty.* 2. replay ball from previous spot, with the one shot penalty. 3. drop ball from entry point, with the one shot penalty. 4. go to far side of hazard, in line with point of entry, drop ball. One shot penalty assessed.

  13. ONE STROKE PENALTIESUnplayable Lie • Ball lands in a bush for example. • A player has three options: 1. replay ball from previous spot, with the one shot penalty. 2. drop ball two club lengths from spot, with the one shot penalty. 3. go back in line from hole to play through unplayable lie.

  14. ONE STROKE PENALTIESAccidentally moving the ball • Kicking ball while looking for it • Must move it back to original position with one stroke penalty. • If ball is not returned it becomes a two stroke penalty.

  15. TWO STROKE PENALTIESGrounding the club in a hazard • If club touches ground or an object in the ground before the swing. • Example, you hit a tree before striking a ball in a water hazard.

  16. TWOSTROKEPENALTIESPlaying the wrong ball • Know the markings of your ball • Do not play another person’s ball

  17. TWO STROKE PENALTIESStriking the flag or another ball while putting • Move the flag • Make sure opponents ball not in your target line

  18. TWO STROKE PENALTIESAsking Advice • In competition play • Which club should I use? • How can I correct my swing?

  19. ETIQUETTE • No penalties are assessed for violating the rules of etiquette. • Allows other players to enjoy the game.

  20. 1. GROUP PLAY • Encouraged, but not mandatory • Twosomes, threesomes and foursomes • Go to course alone, you can join a group

  21. 2. TEE TIME • Call ahead to schedule tee time • Arrive early to get ready (i.e. check-in, get equipment, and warm-up) • First player to tee off has “honors’ • Usually guests or winner of coin flip

  22. 3. ORDER OF PLAY • Farthest from hole hits first • Other players stay behind that player • Move to next furthest ball and continue • Order of play for next hole Lowest score to highest score

  23. 4. ON THE GREEN • Furthest from hole putts first • Should mark and remove ball from green until it is your turn • Tend the flag • Do not stand in a player’s sight line • Remain quiet and still during a putt • Do not walk in a player’s target line

  24. 5. PACE OF PLAY • Be ready to play your shot when it is your turn - Have club you want - Move to ball quickly • Once hole is finished move off green quickly • Allow faster groups to play through

  25. 6. MAINTAIN THE COURSE • Rake the sand bunker after use • Repair divots made in ground • Lay flag down, do not drop it • Do not lay golf bag or any other equipment on the green

  26. 7. BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS • Be sure area is clear before swinging club • Do not play a shot if there is a danger of hitting someone • Yell “FORE” if a ball looks like it might hit someone

  27. 8. CART OPERATION • Drive cart only where allowed • Never drive on a green • Park cart out of the way of other players

  28. 9. DRESS CODE • Follow dress code of the golf course • Slacks or hemmed shorts • Soft-spiked shoes or tennis shoes • Golf or collared shirts

  29. 10. GOLF WITH COURTESY • Be quiet during a shot • Do not stand in a player’s sight line • Do not allow your shadow to fall a player’s golf ball • Tend the flag on the green • Return equipment back to the right player
