  4. 1. How is E-Networking different now from “back in the day” social networking… • …Innovation and Technology • Employers have visibility to candidates for FREE! • “If it’s Free…It’s for Me”, bottom line thinking • No need to “contact” someone, recruiters can look without touching • Easily accessible by recruiters and networkers • Search is at your fingertips, no more rolodex or waiting on someone to get back to you with a contact • You can easily update your profile and contact information • Employers can post jobs on LinkedIn • Companies can navigate specific skill sets and groups • Skill set: Bi-lingual, Accountant, Recruiter • Group: SWE, NBMBA • Companies pay to have access to all LinkedIn members

  5. 2.How is LinkedIn different than Facebook or MySpace… • …It’s Business • LinkedIn is focused on professionals and business • Information on LinkedIn should be business/education related • Your LinkedIn Profile should be like a detailed resume • Facebook and MySpace encourage non-work related communication • These are sites to upload family photos • These sites are where you can share your thought of the day • Groups • LinkedIn groups are specific to your profession and affinity regarding work and business • MySpace and Facebook groups are usually geared towards social activities. (John Wall Fan )

  6. 3.What if I am not comfortable with the on-line world… • …Get comfortable • Explore the internet • You have to adapt to be considered • Explore LinkedIn before you post • You can easily update your LinkedIn profile, practice • Ask for help • Talk with someone who knows how it works • Friends, coworkers • 3. Be sure to update your profile • If your e-mail changes • If your phone number changes • If your employment status changes or you have taken on additional responsibilities at your current job

  7. 4.Are all E-Networks the same? • …They can be similar, but… • LinkedIn is free for both employers and members • Sites like Jigsaw use a point system and may charge • Facebook and MySpace are more social than professional • Monster, Ladders and CareerBuilder charge employers to post and search • You should still post your resume on those sites • LinkedIn posts employers' jobs • Employers can post jobs for you to search for free • LinkedIn alerts • Groups members are alerted to activities • Group members can participate in Q&A to expand your network or learn more about your field

  8. 5.Do I have to include a resume… • …YES, YES, YES, kind of • Actually your profile should be a detailed version of your resume • Copy paste your resume bullets • Be sure to use as many key words as possible • Research jobs you want and use key words from the description • Don’t leave anything out • Recruiters search for groups, skill set and key words • Worse than leaving information out is wrong information or dated information

  9. How do recruiters use E-Networking? • Search LinkedIn Groups • Search Skill Sets and Key Words • “Working” through others

  10. Search LinkedIn Groups… • …Affiliate yourself • Be sure to join groups to which you have affinity • Veterans Groups, Women's groups, etc • Become more educate about companies that have hired people “ like you” • Q & A • Recruiters may join a session to learn who are the subject matter experts (SME); participate if you have time • Be careful not to make it appear as if that’s ALL you do

  11. Search Skill Sets and Key Words… • …the easiest ways for a recruiter to find you • Key words are key • Be sure you are up to date on current words for jobs and descriptions • Entire company = Enterprise • 10 key = data entry • Outside the box = Innovative • Use key words in your bullet descriptions of previous work • Use key words in your tag line • Your success is only as good as your profile • Your profile is a living document

  12. 3.“Working” though others… • …recruiters still pick up the phone • Building relationships • Be sure to build relationships when E-Networking, not just contacts • If you have a common interest with an contact, explore it • Other people with your skill set are getting calls, how can you leverage the information? • Recommendations on LinkedIn • Be someone that someone else would recommend • Co-workers and/or supervisors • It’s OK to solicit them

  13. How can E-Networking assist with professional development? • Latest trends in… • Hiring • Job Elimination • Business Recruiting Strategies • Profiles that get results

  14. 1. Latest trends in Hiring & Job Elimination… • …can be found via E-Networking • Review jobs that are posted • Look on Monster and CB, look outside your region and state • Is the job you want still out there? • Has the pay changed? • Apply to jobs out of state, work remotely • What jobs are being off-shored/rural shored • It’s no longer just entry level, Project Managers are off-shored • Working remotely is a big cost saver for companies, think about the home office option

  15. 2. Business Recruiting Strategies… • …have changed. • Candidates are “weeded out not weeded in” • Your profile, if not up to date or accurate, can get you eliminated from consideration quickly • Several candidates are competing for fewer jobs • One chance to make a first impression • What jobs have changed, Where did they go • It’s no longer entry level positions that are in foreign countries ,Project Managers are off-shored • Middle management has moved back in from the downsizing trend, back but now those jobs are in other countries.

  16. 2.1 Profile Do’s and Don’ts… • …that will make or break you • What to include • Details about your experience and education • School projects, don’t forget those • Change your tag line every couple months so it’s fresh • If you change jobs, be sure your profile is up to date • What not to include • Negative information about previous employers • References that are friends or family • Long narrative descriptions • Poor format • Personal information (family status, age, unprofessional pictures) TIP: Tell the TRUTH. Facts…nothing but the Facts
