  1. Lesson 4.7: Scientific Notation (8.1)(101) = (8.1)(102) = (8.1)(103) = (8.1)(104) = (8.1)(105) = 81 810 8100 81,000 810,000 When multiply by a positive power of 10, move decimal to right same number of places as the exponent. When multiply by a negative power of 10, move decimal to left same number of places as the exponent.

  2. Scientific Notation – a short way to write a very long number. Examples: Standard Form 1) 3,240,000,000,000 2) 0.000021 Scientific Notation 1) 3.24x 1012 2) 2.1 x 10-5

  3. To write a number in scientific notation: • Move decimal - ONE digit to the left • Multiply (use X for times symbol) by a power of 10 • Exponent = number of places moved thedecimal • Exponent = positive if “large” number. • Exponent = negative if “small” number. • Ex. “large” 345,000,000 and -345,000,000 • Ex. “small” 0.00000000234 and – 0.000000000234

  4. Write in Scientific Notation. 1) 32,400,000 2) 0.0000083 3.24 x 107 8.3 x 10-6 4) -932,000,000,000 3) -0.003289 -3.289 x 10-3 -9.32 x 1011

  5. 2,460,000 6) -32,290,000,000 • 7) - 0.0002453 8) 0.000000345 -3.229 x 1010 2.46 x 106 3.45 x 10-7 -2.453 x 10-4

  6. Write in Standard Form. 4) 2.3 x 10-7 5) 9.1483 x 106 6) -3.75 x 10-4 7) - 1.2x 103

  7. Write in Standard Form. 1) 4.53 x 10-5 2) 8.316 x 108 0.0000453 831,600,000 3) -7.2 x 104 -72,000
