  1. 2013 SHRM MN Leadership Conference Joyce LeMay, SPHR State Council Membership Director Karen Gureghian, SPHR State Council Membership Liaison

  2. 2012 Membership accomplishments • Created a Membership brochure which lists all 15 chapters and their contact information • Completed monthly phone calls with Membership Directors or Presidents from each chapter to discuss Membership • Sent quarterly e-blasts to at-large SHRM members in Minnesota encouraging them to join a local chapter • Membership table at the Workforce Flexibility Expo in the Twin Cities in order to promote local chapter membership and awareness • Conducted State Conference Membership event to encourage at-large members to meet representatives from local chapters • Membership table at State Conference in Rochester to promote local chapter membership • Conducted Membership survey to solicit feedback regarding this years’ membership initiatives

  3. 2012 Membership survey results • 6 of the 15 chapters completed the survey • Disappointed with response rate to the survey therefore not valid data • Majority of respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with Membership initiatives (phone calls, brochure, eblasts, Membership tables, Membership event at State Conference) this year • Some preferred changed frequency of phone calls to quarterly

  4. 2013 MN State Membership Goals • MN State Conference • Host membership booth • Host Membership event for at-large members • Research state wide membership application • Continue to work with chapters to develop retention tracking mechanisms • Continue to implement specific initiatives (brochure, quarterly eblasts to at-large members, at-large event at State Conference, membership table at State Conference) to encourage at-large members to join local chapters • Meet SHRM national membership goals • Develop ongoing relationship with chapter presidents’ and/or membership directors

  5. SHRM Membership Goals 2013 • Increase membership 3% from previous year • Stars- 1 to 3.99% growth (2012 – 0 to2.99%) • Superstars- over 4% growth (2012– over 3%) • Membership retention rate of at least 80% • Work toward 25 minimum and 51% of chapter members being SHRM members (required by 2017)

  6. Council Membership Liaison Role • More personal touch with chapters • Contact once per month to discuss membership strategy • Build relationship between chapters and council to aid chapters with membership issues • Allows council to reach out and support chapters more directly • Value of team work

  7. Chapter Membership Liaisons

  8. SHRM Leadership conference highlights • Average Association retention rate is 68% • SHRM retains at 80% total number of membership. Local membership somewhat lower • Most people are HR professionals for ten years before they join an association!  We need to connect with young professionals and new to the field. • Volunteer resource center - http://www.shrm.org/Communities/VolunteerResources/Pages/2010MembershipSummit.aspx • Recommendation: Each chapter have a membership committee to deal with membership acquisition, new member on-boarding, member engagement, and member reinstatement

  9. IChapter has Launched • What will you be able to do? • Download current roster, download expired chapter member, download at large member within zip code ranges, download latest audit letter, roll out by chapter number • Roll Out Schedule? • Intent to roll out by chapter number to all chapters. Hope to be done rolling out by May but no firm commitments. Have a total of 600 chapters. Currently rolling out to first 50 chapters.
