  3. 1. What is PORTA? • Comprehensive portal site for navigating users to digital information • Released in October 2007 • PORTA - the short name for the NDL Digital Archive Portal • “Gateway” to digital information in Japan • English version opened March 31, 2008

  7. 3-1. Search functions • Search the metadata assigned to each content • Use two types of search method - search database compiled by harvested metadata in advance - cross-search by accessing contents directly through the network on request

Other search functions • Associative search - Search method using keywords having a high association with phrases and natural language - Useful to seek information related broadly to a theme instead of narrowing down the search by keywords • Classification search - Search by following NDC, NDLC

  20. 4. Cooperation with PORTA • To be searchable by PORTA : Guideline - Implement common specifications and guidelines for system cooperation - Metadata element set for harvesting and cross-search - Communications protocols

  21. 4. Cooperation with PORTA • Use of the interface provided by PORTA - To have outside systems utilize the search function of PORTA, it provides an API (Application Program Interface) - Released API : SRW, OpenSearch, OpenURL, Z39.50 - OAI-PMH API for data harvesting are planned to release

PORTA in the future • To build a national digital collection… - “NDL Digital Archiving System” for long-term preservation and access to digital information - Will be Launched in FY 2009 - PORTA will cooperate with NDL Digital Archiving System to facilitate access to digital information - improve functions and increase the searchable contents - expand cross-sectoral cooperation!
