  4. The MODP Magnox Optimised Decommissioning Programme (MODP) The work programme that is being delivered by Magnox and EnergySolutions on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority

The MODP • Maximise the value from the remaining operating site at Wylfa (and Oldbury until it ceased generation in February 2012) • Complete the Magnox Operating Programme (MOP) - dealing with the remaining spent fuel • Deliver early care and maintenance at Bradwell and Trawsfynydd • Deliver a safe interim care and maintenance state at Chapelcross and Dungeness • Pioneer innovative and transformational ways of working through the introduction of Strategic Programme delivery with a view to minimising lifetime costs • Safe implementation of the Berkeley active waste vaults retrieval project to address one of the highest hazards • Reshape and reduce our workforce in line with the MODP whilst providing strong and responsive support to our people The main elements

Oldbury – generated £300 million extra revenue from 2008 – 2012 through inter-reactor transfer and extended generation • Wylfa – secured extended generation • Dungeness A – defuelling completed • Chapelcross - cooling pond one drained • Sizewell A – major asbestos stripping project completed Fuelled sites

Berkeley – The reactors were the first in the UK to enter safestore, while the first Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) recovered from the vaults and placed into fit-for-purpose interim storage • Hinkley Point A – turbine hall backfilled in conjunction with EDF Energy • Hunterston A – ILW store sealed and ready to be commissioned Decommissioning sites

Bradwell – • the turbine hall has been demolished • a fuel element debris dissolution plant is being built • the pond has been drained and painted • work has begun to construct an interim storage facility for ILW. • Trawsfynydd – • the reactors are being prepared for safestore • ILW is being placed into interim storage • the ponds are being scabbled Accelerated sites

  13. MODP outcomes • Waste is dealt with earlier than originally planned and hazard is reduced • Lead and learn means that experience is shared between the sites improving delivery as each programme develops

  14. MODP outcomes • Care and maintenance is broughtforward – savings 34 site years fromthe total required to get all the sites to that phase • Adding all the benefits togetherleads to a lifetime saving of£1.3 billion
