Learning Legacy from Olympics • ‘ The shared vision among central Government, funders LOCOG and many HEI’s is that the 2012 Games present a once-in-a-life time opportunity to create work that will have a genuine legacy’ (1) • Games related research now being undertaken in the UK across many subject areas • Olympics provide a unique opportunity to develop future generations health

Aims of the day • Share insights of the 2012 Olympics being delivered and educational legacy of the games (EEDA) • Link to subjects developed at Higher Education and Research topics in HSLT. • Update of e:legacies project 2010 Winter Olympics • Explore ideas of a steering group and themes for future Olympic SIG

The partnership • We are different organisations from across the county with a common interest to maximise the opportunities and benefits from the London 2012 Games for the people of Hertfordshire. • View members • Become a member • Download a copy of our partnership leaflet • Our structure • The following four sub groups report to the Board: • Sports Development Lead: Nick Brooking (University of Hertfordshire) • Culture, Leisure and Tourism Lead: Annie Hawkins (Enjoy Hertfordshire) • Education, Skills and Employment Lead: James Dickinson (Hertfordshire County Council) • We also have the 2012 Local Authority Group with representatives from every Council in Hertfordshire.

Our Vision • We are supporting the delivery of the London 2012 Games and maximising the opportunities and benefits for people who visit, live, work and study in Hertfordshire. • View our strategy to 2014Our legacy ambitions • The London 2012 Games is a launch pad to bring about positive changes for the people of Hertfordshire. These changes don’t have to end when the Games finish in 2012. • In the run up to the Games and beyond 2012 we want to achieve: • Increased participation in sport, competing and volunteering • Healthier communities • Better sports facilities • More opportunities for young people • An established countywide Talented Young Athletes scheme • A world class sports facility that everyone can use The White Water Canoe Slalom Centre • Closer communities - through sport and cultural events

  9. London 2012 - the reality • Europe’s largest regeneration project • £9.32 billion in facilities and regeneration projects • A 16,000 capacity Olympic Village transformed into homes after the Games • An Olympic venue in Herts.

Facts and Figures • Olympic Course: 300m x 12m x 5m drop : 750m2 start pool • Intermediate course : 160m x 9m x 1.6m drop - 300m2 start pool • Spectator capacity: Games time 12,000 • Lake: Total water 9000m3 filled from aquifer Depth 1.8m : Depth when both courses running 1.2m • Floodlighting : all parts of each course • Building::Reception, Club/Seminar room, Café, Changing, Offices, Storage, spacereserved for BCU

  20. How it all started for me ? • The learning legacy of the future Olympic Games to Enhance the Teaching of Tourism and Sustainable Development?

  21. Research project 2008/9 Project objectives To identify and maximize the learning opportunities for students that are presented by the 2010 winter and 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games. To co-ordinate an on-line resource base to support the teaching and learning of the impacts of the Olympics through a range of academic subject areas in Tourism and Hospitality, and support programme development of a new Event Management degree.

  22. To explore and identify how through the Olympics, sustainable development can be further weaved into teaching and learning strategies. To facilitate the exchange of material between UH academics and Canadian academics in the researching and teaching of subjects related to future Olympics

  27. Podium • 'Podium' is the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games. The Unit has a nationwide remit and has two major aims; To communicate both within the sector and with outside agencies about the potential for Universities and Colleges to support the successful staging and delivery of the 2012 Games. To coordinate the development of activity within the sector that maximises the benefits of hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in this country, contributing to the building of a sustainable and wide reaching legacy.

Potential themes links - HSLT • London’s hosting of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 provides an opportunity to raise the profile of the subjects in our Network.  • Our courses provide the professional skills, knowledge and understanding which are essential for success in such a multifaceted and complex event. Below are examples of how our subject areas will contribute to the Olympics:  • Sciences that underpin the preparation of elite athletes for world class performance; • the coaching and sports management capacity required to support growing participation in sport; • the provision of facilities and opportunities for active leisure; • understanding the needs of tourists  • travel and tourism management skills essential for the provision of successful events; • high quality hospitality facilities and services; • our close working relationships with industry and employers and • our well established multicultural awareness and international outlook. • We can therefore rightly claim to be the subjects for the Olympics!
