In the beginning… • Facts: • WA DTSC delegated to take the national lead on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and dementia care • In WA : Aboriginal population • 77,694 people; 13.5% of all Aborigines; 3.4% WA Pop • ~70% live in Perth and South West. • Incidence of dementia among Aborigines peoples appears to be more prevalent than non-Aboriginal people Training to care for people with dementia

Questions • How are Aboriginal people with dementia cared for? • How many Aboriginal people reside in RACFs? • Which RACFs provide services for Aboriginal people? • How is residential care experienced by Aboriginal people? • What is culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal people with dementia? • How do people learn care practices that are culturally sensitive for Aboriginal people? • How can (or should) Wadjela organisations and people become leaders in dementia care for Aboriginal people? Training to care for people with dementia

Idea!! • Apply adult learning principles to engage a Residential Aged Care Facility in cultural awareness training in a culturally sensitive manner • Led by an Aboriginal artist, involve Aboriginal residents, their families and all staff in creating pieces of public art within a Residential Aged Care Facility • Evaluate, document and disseminate the experiences and lessons learnt Training to care for people with dementia

Challenges • Find a RACF: • With a cluster of 5+ Aboriginal residents • Willing and ready to engage in education and quality improvement • Find an Aboriginal artist • With experience in community development • And a variety of art practices • Find a film maker • With experience working with Aboriginal people • Available and flexible Training to care for people with dementia

And respect the… • many cultural, ethnic and religions represented (residents, families and staff) within any RACF • ethical and legal rights and responsibilities of residents, families/advocates, staff, organisations and governments • diversity of Aboriginal culture, identity and experiences • strengths and challenges of indigenous communities arising from of the continuing effects of colonisation, dispossession, injustice and racism Training to care for people with dementia
