  6. Suicide Awareness • MYTH: • Asking about it plants the thought of doing it • If I ignore the minor attempt, then that means I addressed it • It runs in the family • Few professionals commit suicide • If they want to kill themselves, then there is nothing stopping them • Suicidal people are unwilling to seek help

  8. Suicide Awareness • Awareness of Warning Signs: (cont.) • Common characteristics of suicide victims • Intense emotional pain • Frustrated needs for security, achievement, or friendship. • Suicide is seen as only solution. • Hopeless, hapless, and helpless. • Stop the pain by ending awareness. • Black and white thinking: death the only answer. • Feelings of ambivalence; want to die, but want to live. • Give clues about imminent suicide. • Want to run away from the pain. • Lifelong pattern of poor coping skills.

  16. Religious Respect Questions?

  17. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) • Air University Instruction 36-2308, Academic Freedom • This instruction establishes Air University’s policy on academic freedom. It applies to all Air University schools and colleges, all activities in the Air University educational forum, Air University-sponsored events as well as publications. Portions of this instruction are subject to Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) as described in paragraphs 2.5 and 2.6.1.2.

  18. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) • Free expression of opinions and ideas • Air University faculty, students, and staff are members of a learned profession, and members of their respective educational organizations. The free exchange of opinions and ideas is essential to the educational process and, to the greatest extent possible, faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to speak and write freely. Even in this academic setting, however, the importance of Air University’s military mission requires limits on some types of expression.

  19. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) • Restrictions IAW Articles 88 and 89 of the UCMJ • IAW UCMJ commissioned officers, officer trainees, and cadets subject to the UCMJ may not use contemptuous words toward the President, Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Air Force, and others. • Should make every effort to indicate clearly that the opinions they express are personal to the member, and do not represent the official views of their organization, Air University, the United States Air Force, the U.S. government, or any other government or academic community.

  20. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) • Definition of Academic Integrity: • Uncompromising adherence to a code of ethics, morality, conduct, scholarship, and other values related to academic activity. • Breaches of Academic Integrity • Plagiarism • Cheating • Misrepresentation • Unprofessional Relationships (Including Fraternization)

  21. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) • Academic Integrity Violations: • Failure on the part of any individual to practice academic integrity reflects discredit both on the Air Force and on the individual and is not condoned by Air University. All individuals who violate this instruction are subject to adverse administrative action including disenrollment from school, disciplinary action, and discharge from the service.

  22. Academic Freedom & Academic Integrity (AF&AI) Questions?

  23. Sexual Assault • The term sexual assault is an "umbrella" term that includes many different types of sex-related offenses. The Department of Defense (DoD) defines sexual assault for training purposes as follows: • intentional sexual contact, characterized by use of force, physical threat or abuse of authority or when the victim does not or cannot consent. • Sexual assault includes rape, nonconsensual sodomy (oral or anal sex), indecent assault (unwanted, inappropriate sexual contact or fondling), or attempts to commit these acts. • Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender or spousal relationship or age of victim.

  24. Sexual Assault • What constitutes “unable” to give consent: • Alcohol or drug impaired • Unconscious; asleep • Underage • Mentally handicapped • Physically helpless • Sexual assault is actual or attempted sexual relations with another person against her or his will or without her or his consent. Sexual assault is a crime. Offenders can be prosecuted in a criminal court and if found guilty, an offender may go to prison.

  25. Sexual Assault “Why Report it?!?” • Serious impact to well being – medically (injury, STDs, pregnancy), and emotionally (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD)) • Early treatment means early recovery • When reporting it: • Find a safe place or seek a person that you feel safe with ASAP! • Seek medical attention • For forensic evidence do not bath/shower and save the clothing

  26. Sexual Assault Important Numbers: • Campus SA Hotline: 210-458-4242 (24 Hrs) • Local Rape Crisis Center: 210-349-7273 • Campus Counseling Center: 210-458-4140 • Campus Clinic: 210-458-4142 • Hospital/ER: 210-704-2011 • Campus Security: 210-458-4911 • Community Law Enforcement: 911

  27. Sexual Harassment • Definition: A form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. • DoD and Air Force policy on sexual harassment: • Zero Tolerance!!! • Reporting Sexual Assault • Confront the offender – ONLY IF YOU FEEL SAFE; tell that person how you felt • Report it to Cadre – if confronting the offender does not work • There should never be a retribution against someone reporting sexual harassment or sexual assault incidents
