  3. Common Types of Files on the Internet and the Web, with File Extensions • Text files (.txt, .asc, .doc, .pdf) • Data files (.xls, .wks) • Image files (.gif, .jpg, .tif) • Audio files (.au, .wav, .ra, .mp3) • Multimedia files (.mpg, .mov, .rm) • Compressed files (.zip, .gz)

  4. Compressed Files • Examples: .zip, .gz • A file is compressed to save space on a server or to be transferred over the Internet more quickly • These files must be uncompressed to be used • To uncompress, use PKZIP or WinZip

  5. Capturing and Using Text and Images from the Web • There are several browser options for retrieving material from the Web, for example: • Printing a portion or an entire Web page • Saving a portion or an entire Web page • Emailing a Web page • Saving images
