  2. Land • It’s located in Northern Africa, bordering the North Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea, between Algeria and Western Sahara • Atlas Mtns.- average 11,000 ft. in ele. • Resources- coal, iron, and lead

  3. Climate/vegetation • Generally hot all year round • Mainly trees- oak, juniper, cedar, and fir • Wild life- gazelle, panther, and baboon

  4. Government • Constitutional monarchy • Population of 33.8 million • Life expectancy- m=69, f=74 • King Mohammed the 6th • Driss Jettou is the prime minister

  5. History • 1996: Morocco signs Euro-Mediterranean partnership with European Union • 1999: King Hassan dies and leaves the throne to his son

  6. Current event Moroccan Convicted in Madrid Bombing A 31 year old Moroccan was found to be involved in a terrorist group. He was involved in the 2004 train bombing. He was sentenced to 20 years to prison. December 18, 2008

  7. Economy • 66% male and 44% female • Exports: phosphates, fertilizers, food, minerals • Currency- $1.00 is $7.89 Dirhams • Industry mining- houses 2/3 of worlds phosphate reserves

Culture • Languages they speak are Arabic, Berber dialects, and in business, government, and diplomacy French is used often • Men and women wear djellaba( hooded garment with sleeves • Basically Islamic architecture • At the heart of the houses there’s courtyard gardens and on the outside of the walls there’s decorations • Other architecture reflect from the past in fortified palaces and desert strongholds

  9. Muslims 98.7%, Christian 1.1%, and Jewish 0.2% • The national dish of Morocco is Tajine it’s made with vegetables and either meat, chicken or fish, and is cooked in an earthenware bowl • Mint tea is the national drink

  10. Places to visit • Marrakeck- imperial city bazaar, Majorelle gardens • Essaouira- coastal (beach), fresh seafood, no cars, clean • Saadian tombs- dynasty that ruled Morocco during the 16th and 17th century
