Brief Timeline • Born in 1905 on Lower East Side of Manhattan • 1933- Newman is a candidate for election as New York City Mayor • 1930s- Counts himself as a committed anarchist • Leads protest against conservative jury for an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, mounts a counter-exhibition • 1946- Newman organizes first exhibition at Betty Parson’s gallery in New York (roster includes Rothko, Still, and later, Pollock) • 1948- Publishes essay ‘The Sublime is Now’, arguing for a new type of art, free from the weight of European tradition

  3. 1950- Newman’s first solo exhibition at Betty Parsons Gallery, receives a largely negative response • 1966- “The Station’s of the Cross” opens at the Guggenheim Museum, earns him wide recognition • 1968- Makes the sculpture “Lace curtain for Mayor Daley in protest against police brutality towards anti-Vietnam War demonstrators • 1969- Newman’s first one-man gallery show in 10 years opens in NY, show is praised • http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/newman/chronology.htm

Newman’s Signature • Barnett Newman was among the most extreme of the Abstract Expressionists • His paintings drenched viewers in color, he interpreted space as color, and he created huge paintings that engulf the viewer to make his idea of space more apparent • “It is interesting to me to notice how difficult it is for people to take the intense heat and blaze of my color. If my paintings were empty they could take them with ease….Also, I have never manipulated colors– I have tried to create color.” • Newman developed the “zip”, which refers to a band or stripe painted vertically or sometimes horizontally on his paintings that became his signature • The “zip” acts like an opening within the picture field and interrupts a unified color field, it functions as a break in the canvas • He later turned this band into sculpture • http://www.walkerart.org/resources/res_pc_newman.html
