The Wisconsin Covenant • The goal of the Wisconsin Covenant was for 8th and incoming 9th grade students to aspire to and prepare for higher education. • Every Wisconsin student should know that if they are willing to work hard in high school, stay out of trouble and contribute to their community, college IS possible • Enrollment to WC ended this year • 2010/11 eighth graders (in other words, current freshmen) have until September 30, 2011

The Pledge Students who sign agree to • Graduate from a Wisconsin high school • Maintain at least a B average while in high school • Take classes in high school that will prepare them for entrance into higher education and will meet or exceed college entrance requirements • Demonstrate good citizenship and engage in activities that support their community

  4. The Pledge • Apply for state and federal financial aid in a timely manner • Apply and do all that is necessary to gain admission to a University of Wisconsin System institution, a Wisconsin Technical College, and/or a Wisconsin private college or university Students who sign agree to

Students who sign and complete the pledgerequirements can expect • Recognition as a Wisconsin Covenant Scholar • A place in a University of Wisconsin System institution, a Wisconsin Technical College, or a Wisconsin private college or university • A financial aid package based on their family’s federally defined financial need that includes the WI Covenant Scholars Grant and the WI Covenant Foundation Grant

  6. Senior Confirmation ProcessDue April 1st Process for WC students to verify they have met the WC Pledge requirements

Confirmation Timeline Early Fall 2011: • Wisconsin Covenant seniors will receive a confirmation “prep” mailing • Confirmation process webinars for high school Primary Contacts December, 2011: • Confirmation forms are mailed to students • Schools will receive their annual list of WC students, which includes students’ WC IDs. January 1, 2012:  • Per Wisconsin administrative rule, students can start the confirmation process • High schools begin outreach to students: • In 2011 outreach varied by school, but most outreach included: • Daily announcements • Robo-calls to families • Announcements in newsletters • WC seniors one-on-ones to complete the forms

  9. UWM Covenant Scholars by the numbers • Back in July 2011 we had confirmed 683 students as Wisconsin Covenant Scholars that had applied to UW-Milwaukee for fall 2011. • 256 students would have received $ 250 • 318 students would have received $1000 • 109 students would have received $1500

  10. WC Scholars Awarded and Enrolled at UWM Today • 300 WC Scholars are currently attending UWM • 16 African American • 12 Latino • 3 Asian American • 18 Multi-Ethnic • 13 South East Asian • 226 White • 12 other

  11. Where are they at UWM? • 117 L & S • 33 Health Sciences • 25 Engineering • 24 Peck School • 21 Lubar • 18 Architecture • 17 Nursing • 16 Social Welfare • 15 Education • 2 Global Studies • 11yet to be classified

WISCONSIN COVENANT State Wide (As of July 2011) • 18,000 studentssigned the WC pledge 4 years ago • ONLY 5,247have been confirmed as WC Scholars • 12, 369 Did NOTfollowed through with the necessary steps to be awarded a WC Grant • 553 of the 5,247WC students have an EFC of $0 dollars • 81%of the WC students will attend 4yr colleges (Madison, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Oshkosh and Milwaukee. • 6.3%are attending Marathon, Fox Valley, Marshfield, Barron, and Rock County • 70%of WC Scholars indicated that they had taken AP courses • 26%of WC are 1st generation

My Role at UW-Milwaukee • To focus of the on activities related to Pre-Admission (Recruitment & Outreach events w/ local schools through DRO/Financial Aid Workshops, increase WC awareness, etc.) • Retention of WC Scholars through collaboration and the development of On-Campus Activities related to advising, FYC (Mentoring), tutoring resources, Service Learning, leadership building, financial aid awareness, etc. • Help increase the Graduation rate of WC Scholars at UW-Milwaukee by identifying potential academic barriers. • Educating families about the WC program and confirmation process • 70% appointment at DRO, and 30 % appointment at Financial Aid

WC at DRO • Preview Days (20 minute breakout session for parents and students) • U-visits • Talisma • High School visits (Recently was able to reach over 3000 9th graders before the September 30th deadline) • National College Fairs • Pre-Tours Presentationsat the visitor center (COD of the day) • WC presence at Open House 2011

  15. WI Covenant Activities At UWM • Welcomed the Scholars on Sept. 1st (75 total) • Scholar Leadership TEAM has been created. (Meets Monthly) • Supplemental Academic and Financial Aid Advising • CHECK –IN Advising Friday Mornings 9-12@ Campus Connections Table (Once a Month) • Sandburg Hall Activities • Scholar Connection (Weekly HTML Newsletter) • Calendar of Events

  16. WC activities at UWM • MAP-WORKS this Fall (So far 245/300 WCS have taken the survey 86.3%) • FYC Project Welcome (Scholars calling Future Scholars) Students will remind WCS about important deadlines • Engaging Scholars in Campus Wide Activities and Academic Resources.

  17. WC 2012-13 • WC Living Learning Community w/ focus on Leadership and service learning. To be housed in Sandburg Halls. • More WC Scholars on our Campus
