  2. Including a Quote • When you use exact words put it in quotes and cite the document you got it from. Ex: Julius Caesar was ruthless and manipulative ruler. However, he was also “a very effective ruler who addressed the needs of the poorest of citizens” (Document 1)

  3. Paraphrasing a Document • Sometimes the exact quote is too long but you still can use it if you paraphrase (summarize) it and cite the document you got it from. Ex: “The Church was adept and manipulating both the masses and the political rulers who saw them as the ultimate authority of God; to challenge the Church was to challenge God.” Paraphrase: The Church did an excellent job of manipulating both government and society (Document 2).
