  1. January 30, 2014 • You Need: • 2 big papers • Stick of “charcoal” • Paper Towel • Activity: • Elephant studies (sketching and drawings)

  2. Some things to know about elephants • 2 species: Asian (endangered)& African • Asian elephants: smaller ears/convex back • African elephants: larger ears/concave back • Represents strength, wisdom, intelligence & responsibility in some cultures • Eat 300-400lbs of food a day! • All grasses, vegetables & fruit when available • One of the most intelligent land mammals in the world • Display signs of joy & grief, play & depression just like humans • Form deep bonds & memories with herd • Biggest threats: • Humans-poaching, environment destruction/climate change

  3. Let’s study their forms to be able to better SCULPT them from clay later • Blind contour: • Drawing without looking at your paper (review) • Spend 2-3 minutes drawing the outside edges. Get all the texture and bumps as you can. • DON’T LOOK AT YOUR DRAWING! Feel the photograph with your eyes and try to get your hand to move along with it.

  4. Elephant Heads • Let’s focus on the faces and heads of the elephant. • You can look at your paper and draw normally now. • Get in the edges first and if you have time, add some shadows and textures. • Notice where the eyes are! They are quite low in the head.

  5. Bodies • Continue to drawing normally. Take your time • Ask yourself and notice: • How long are the legs in relationship to the body? • How big is the head in relationship to the body? • How long is the trunk in relationship to the head?
