  2. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) • Founded in October 1945 (now with 191 member countries) • Achieving food security for all at the heart of FAO’s efforts • Logo: FIAT PANIS – Food for All • Technical agency – focus on quality delivery • Not Donor Agency

Twin-Track Approach In collaboration with other UN Agencies – WFP and IFAD- FAO implements a “Twin Track Approach” Immediate – recognize the need direct action to alleviate hunger for the most vulnerable Long term – agricultural, food security, nutrition and rural development programs to eliminate the root cause of hunger

  4. Future Challenge – How to feed the World in 2050 From High Level Expert Forum - FAO World Population 2050 : 9.2 billion Some indicators must increase: Production – 40% Agricultural Investment – about 50% (est. US$ 83 B/Year) Subsequent to the summit in L’Aquila, G-20 Summit in USA – pledges US$ 22B over three years.

  6. Sharing policy expertise FAO lends its years of experience to member countries in formulating agricultural policy, supporting planning, drafting effective legislation and creating national strategies to achieve rural development and hunger alleviation goals.

  7. Providing a neutral forum for nations FAO provides the setting where rich and poor nations can come together to build common understanding on sustainable agricultural development.

  8. Bringing knowledge to the field Our breadth of knowledge is put to the test in thousand of field projects throughout the world. FAO provides the technical know-how and in a few cases is limited source of funds.

  9. Keeping the wheels of development turning • With more than 190 member countries, every two years, representatives from all member countries meet at the FAO conference to review work and govern the organization’s activities. • One of conference function is to elect a Director General which is for six year term.

  12. TCP Characteristics • TCP max fund of US$500,000/project; period of up to 36 months; has a catalytic or multiplier effects • S-TCP Facility is a special funding provided to the Representation Office to fund programme/project formulation
