  2. Obesity Epidemic in Illinois • One in five Illinois children are obese, the fourth worst rate in the nation. • Illinois ranks in the top ten states for obese/overweight adolescents (ages 10-17 years). • Two-thirds of all Illinoisans are overweight or obese

  3. Economic Impact • In Illinois, adult obesity alone currently adds $3.4 billion to annual health care costs, including $1 billion to Medicaid and $800 million to Medicare. • 56% of publicly insured children are overweight or obese (the highest state prevalence in the nation).

  4. Strategy to Reverse Obesity Trends • The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI): • Supports active engagement of public health stakeholders in multiple sectors • Supports coordination of efforts at all government levels to address public health concerns. • Envisions and achieves change to improve public health together with stakeholders • Accomplishments: State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP).

Strategy to Reverse Obesity Trends • State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) • Vision • Obesity priorities (nutrition and physical activity) • The Obesity Prevention Act (PA96-0155), • Informs policy makers of solutions and promotes coordination of existing initiatives through three public hearings.

  6. Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity • A broad range of stakeholders working to combat the obesity epidemic in Illinois. • Share a common vision and beliefs • Shaping and advancing statewide solutions to reverse dangerous obesity trends.
