  2. Job Description- Aquatics Director To provide Aquatic Programs for Canton City Schools and the City of Canton • To provide youth /adult swimming programs in conjunction with the Canton Recreation Department • Manage and Coach the Canton City Schools Swim Team and Canton McKinley Swim Team

  3. Canton City Schools/ Canton, Ohio • Canton City Schools- 15 elementary Schools • 2nd Graders-Total-761 Free & Reduced Lunch-639 87% • 6th Graders- Total-742 Free & Reduced Lunch-618 83%

  4. CCS Diversity Swimming Programs • Elementary Learn to Swim • Public Learn to Swim • Safe Summer Swim Program • Canton City Schools Swim Team • Canton McKinley Swim Team

  5. Elementary Learn to Swim • Offered FREE to all 2nd and 6th grade students • 8 Day Swim Cycle-55 minute lessons • Part of their PE Class requirement • School Bus transportation to the pool and back to school

Elementary Swim Program • Skills Day- 6th grade students • Each Swimmer is timed in 25 yard Free • Top 2 Females and Top 2 Males compete • Event held after all schools have completed their cycle • TV 11- Broadcast on Channel 11, and I do the commentary • Recruit kids into CCS Swim Team • Staffing- 5 WSI Instructors- teach 4-5 hours day • Funding- Canton City Schools

Safe Summer Swim Program • Canton City Schools and Canton Recreation Department offers FREE Swimming Lessons throughout the summer, along with FREE Open Swim opportunities • Started this program 2008, and has been continuing thru 2009,2010,2011 • June-August- Monday – Thursday-1:00-3:00pm • Grades 2nd-8th-Enrolled in Canton City Schools

Safe Summer Swim Program • Enrollment 2008-Lessons Only-311 Lessons & Open Swim-1174 Open Swim Only -480 Total-3882 2009- Lessons Only-144 Lessons & Open Swim-964 Open Swim Only-1049 Total-4499 2010-Lessons Only-327 Lessons & Open Swim-1428 Open Swim- Only-2387 Total-5469 2011-Lesson Only-268 Lesson & Open Swim-1569 Open Swim Only- 2674 Total- 5634

Safe Summer Swim Program • Funding: • How it got started? • Closing of the Jackson Outdoor Pool in the SE end of Canton that was operated by the City of Canton • Approached Canton Recreation Department and asked to help me with discussions with the City Of Canton Mayors Office to support the need of swimming lessons to our children of CCS • 2008 – I Proposed a Learn to Swim Program to the Mayors Office, this was supported by the Canton Recreation Department. This program would be totally funded by money that was budgeted for swimming in the city. • City wanted a spray park, but I showed them facts about the number of drowning by the African American population • 2008- 2009 – 2 more City Pools were closed down, and the need for this program really became very important • 2008-2011- I have been running this Safe Summer Program and it has been a big success for the students of CCS • The City of Canton has funded $40,000 for this program over the past 4 years

  10. Safe Summer Swim Program • Funding: • Private donor has helped me provide swimming suits and goggles for any child in need • TYR has assisted me with discounted suits/goggles

  11. Public Swimming Lessons • Offered- Spring, Fall Swim Classes • 8 Classes Monday –Thursday- 40-50 minute evening classes • Cost- $25/session • Free- students of CCS on Free & Reduced Lunch Program

  12. Public Swimming Classes • Lessons- June- August • 8 Lessons – Monday- Thursday -40-50 minute lessons • Time- 9:30-12:30 • Program Free for CCS Students on Free and Reduced Lunch Program

  13. Typical Daily Summer Schedule • 5:30am-7:30am- Adult Lap Swimmng • 7:30-9:30am- CCS Swim Team • 9:30am-12:30pm- Public Swimming Lessons • 1:00-3:00- Safe Summer Swim Lessons/ Open Swim • 3:30-7:30- CCS Swim Team/Diving Teams • (different age groups)

CCS and Canton McKinley Swim Teams • Diversity Swimmers • CCS Swim Team-2011- just registered 35 – New swimmers on Free Reduced Lunch Program • Canton McKinley- 2011- 70 swimmers (75% on Free or reduced Lunch) • We provide suits/caps/goggles for anyone in need • Cost is FREE if on Free and Reduced Lunch Program
