Definition • Violation of both state and federal law; illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for employees: “prohibits employment discrimination based on race, sex, colour, national origin or religion.” • uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical behaviour of a sexual nature especially by a person in authority toward a subordinate (such as an employee or student). Sexual advances, favours, and/or verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature.

  3. Inappropriate Behaviours • Sexual comments or jokes. • Sexual phone calls. • Sexual stories. • Sexual looks/gestures. • Explicit videos, pictures, calendars, screen savers, websites. • Unwelcome flirting. • Insisting on dates.

  4. Behaviours Manager/Coworkers • Hostility between co-workers. • Lack of friendship amongst co-workers. • Complaints regarding the opposite sexes actions. • Women who act defensively/angrily toward the opposite sex.

  5. Effects: Educational Environment • Inability to concentrate Lower grades/withdrawal from courses • Changing majors • Absenteeism • Dropping out of school

  6. Effects: Workplace • Decreased productivity • Denial of advancement and/or benefits • Retaliation by harasser • Loss of income or job

  7. What to do if harassed : • Clearly say “no” and that the behaviour offends you • Keep good notes • Consult your company policy on sexual harassment • Report your harassment case • Consult a supervisor or human resource manager • Keep a written record – paper trail • Allow your company to operate within their grievance policy • File an EEOC complaint with the government

  8. The 5 W’s for Your Records : • Who did it? • What did they do/say? • Where did the incident take place? • When did the incident take place? • Witnesses around?

Conclusion:Avoid Being a Harasser • Remember, you may think you are being funny and not intend to offend, but you NEVER know how people may react! • Do not tell dirty, racist, sexist or ethnic jokes. • Do not engage in sexual innuendo or cantering on the job. • Know where to touch (arms and shoulders only)

  10. Summary Avoid co-worker’s who solicit sexual conduct or comments If you need to say, “I hope this doesn’t offend anyone…” – then SAY NO MORE!!!
