  4. ATM service introduction needs • Focus on inter-domain interoperability • Guidelines needed for both the services and the management area (TMN) • Use existing standards and results (e.g. from EURESCOM) as far as possible • Analyse gaps and fill in missing parts • Testing schemes are needed • Allow Europe-wide offering of ATM services

  7. P616: Enh. ATM Implem. Issues (1) • Network Architecture: • Evaluation of the feasibility of PNNI 1.0 routing in a large scale network • Proposal for the implementation of the Xcoop interface over ATM • Congestion Control: • Methods for supporting a multiplicity of ATM Layer Transfer Capabilities and QoS classes within the network • Connection routing algorithms • Network dimensioning principles • Methods for evaluating end-to-end performance at cell level • Parameters to characterise call level performance

  8. All deliverables will be publicly available this week http://www.eurescom.de P616: Enh. ATM Implem. Issues (2) • Usage Metering for Charging and Accounting: • Specification of usage metering parameters • Identification of the network measurement points • Demands on Network Elements for accounting/ billing • Network Layer Protocols: • Comparison and evaluation of solutions, such as: MPOA, Tag Switching, Cell Switch Router, ARIS and IP Switching • Practical evaluation of the WinSock v2 concept • Migration strategies and Guidelines

  10. Management: Validate pre-1997 ATM Concepts • X i/f specs: freephone service (P406), billing accounting & charging (P407), METRAN (P408, P707) , JAMES (P408, P708), trouble ticketing (P612), X i/f security (P710) • X i/f experiments in PET-Lab: P408, P612, P707, P708 • support to X i/f spec and implementation (E-MOL): P414, P609 • mostly network management, little service management • based on GDMO, ASN.1, CMIP, X.25

  11. New Project P813: ATM MoU Support for European ATM service introduction (1) Why this Project? • Results from existing and completed EURESCOM ATM Projects can be exploited. • Expertise is available at EURESCOM to support the ATM MoU. • EURESCOM Project Management supports work. • Some additional (non-MoU) areas need to be addressed.

  12. New Project P813: ATM MoU Support for European ATM service introduction (2) • Finalise ATM specifications to meet requirements of ATM deployment • Reintegrate service and management aspects to support ATM MoU • Results will be public domain • Relates to the two areas: • ATM Technology and services • Management (TMN)

  13. P813: Support for ATM Introduction Main Clients • EURESCOM Shareholders • ATM MoU • ETSI / ITU-T / ATM Forum Expected results • Requirements and technical gap analysis • Test suite and acceptance test procedures • Technical specifications including integration specifications

  14. P813 work items • Initial gap analysis • Interoperable Services, especially U and C plane issues • Management for Europe-wide networks • Test suites • Open items, such as • Methods for call level congestion control. • Investigation of ABR. • Wireless ATM and integration of mobility.

  15. P813: Current situation (1) • In the services area, most specifications are availablein standards, EURESCOM etc. • More work needs to be done in the management area. • Simple solutions are missing in both: There is a need to provide “easier” specifications.

  16. P813: Current situation (2) • Testing needs to be addressed. • Security needs to be addressed. • One-stop shopping is desirable. • How does the Internet fit into all this, or should it?

  17. P813: Who are the participants • So far:BT, Deutsche Telekom, Finnet Group, Hungarian Telecom, Portugal Telecom, PT Austria, Telenor • Other Operators may join • Involvement of non-Shareholders of EURESCOM is possible

  18. ATM MoU Relationships to EURESCOM and ETSI http://www.etno.be/news/ATM_info.html Planned to be released around May 1998 ATM MoU (ETNO) Standards for interoperable European ATM service ATM issues Network management Projects P616, P707, P708, P710, P813 and others Project EASI Technical Committee NA8

  19. EURESCOM and others (ATM MoU) Requirements Requirements 2 use use 1 P813 EASI results results Deliverables Standards (ATM MoU) Deployment 1: Joint EASI/P813; 2: Joint MoU/EASI/P813

  20. EURESCOM and others • Use synergy • Avoid double work • Maintain close co-ordination via regular joint meetings • Exchange results (access to web sites etc.) • Synchronise with ATM MoU
