  2. Purpose of the Rookie Instructor Course • Aim: • To provide aquatics trainers the knowledge, skills and ability to train and assess the RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard programme

  3. Course Outcomes: • By the end of this course candidates will have gained: • Basic knowledge of the Society, it’s structure, Rookie Lifeguard and other award programmes • An understanding of basic Lifesaving and Life Support skills to deliver the Rookie Lifeguard programme

RLSS Education programme progression • National Pool and Beach Lifeguard Qualifications (NPLQ & NBLQ) • National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) • National Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities (RTSSD) • Emergency Response Awards (ER) Swimming Pool Open Water Life Support Distinction Life Support 3 Silver Cross Award of Merit Bronze Cross Bronze Medallion Life Support Community LS Rookie Lifeguard

RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard overview • Aim of the Rookie programme: To prepare Rookies to take better care of themselves, their family and friends and to give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities • Target age 8-12 years • Three stages (Bronze, Silver, Gold) which are each split into three levels (e.g. Bronze level 1, Bronze Level 2 and Bronze Level 3)

  9. Strokes • There are two Lifesaving strokes used in the Rookie programme • Lifesaving backstroke • Lifesaving sidestroke

  10. Skills • Entries and exits • Sculling • Treading Water • Surface Diving • HELP position • Non, weak, injured, unconscious casualty recognition and simulation • Swimming in clothing and removal

  11. Skills • Shout and signal • Reach rescue • Throw a buoyant aid • Throw a non buoyant aid (rope throw) • Wade rescue (buoyant and rigid aids) • Support position • Stirrup lift and climb out • Turning an unconscious casualty in shallow water • Incident training
