  1. Quotations and Citations

  2. MLA Quotation Formats It is possible to use both long and short quotations from a text. However, punctuation and formatting is dramatically different. Short Quote: Dink tells Ender, “That’s right, we never cry” (Card 78). Note the use of the quotations and comma are similar to the Direct Speech even though we are quoting here. However, the ending punctuation changes.

  3. Block Quotes Block Quote (4 lines or more): In the end, Ender seems to embrace their control of him even as he admits to a deep self hate: Well, I’m your man. I’m the bloody bastard you wanted when you had me spawned. I’m your tool, and what difference does it make if I hate the part of me that you most need? What difference does it make that when the little serpents killed me in the game, I agreed with them, and was glad. (Card 85)

  4. Block quotes continued In the previous block quote example, you can see the quote is indented (1”/2.54 cm from the left margin), no quotation marks are used (unless they are present in the text), and the parenthetical citation goes outside of the period. When quoting multiple paragraphs (even short ones, default to the block quote and add an extra indent at the beginning of the distinct paragraphs. Block quotes must be used even more carefully than short quotes.

  5. Avoiding the Block Only use the necessary part of the text to quote. Ellipses (…) can help you avoid too long quotes. The ellipses replaces filler text that you want to exclude. Only use when it will not change the meaning of the quote.

  6. Parenthetical Citations Think about this the parenthetical citation helps us trace the quote to it’s original source. [After a hail of gunfire doesn’t stop V] Creedy: “Die! Die! Why won’t you die. . . Why won’t you die?” V: “Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bullet proof.” (V for Vendetta)

  7. Using and Embedding Now that we’ve established how we place, format, and cite quotes we need to discuss how we use them. To support an argument To further expand an idea Not alone In order to do this properly, for each quote we need to introduce, insert, explain, analyze, and connect
