  1. Scholastic Math Inventory

  2. Scholastic Math Inventory • Interactive, research-based mathematics test • Assess students’ math skills and reports results in Quantilemeasures • At the school level, Quantile measures help to benchmark students math progress and gauge the effectiveness of the math program. • In the classroom, these measure help to benchmark progress, differentiate instruction, identify instructional materials, and establish math achievement goals. • Our students will take the SMI 3 to 5 times this year.

  3. Students access assessment from Student Portal.

  4. Student Login Write this down! Username: student district ID# (use capital letter)Password: kisd1234(Students can change passwords, but we might want to discourage this.)

  5. Steps for Test Preparation • Students will be enrolled and assigned to your “class”. • Sign up for a 40 minute testing time. • Each student will bring a pencil and a piece of scratch paper to the computer lab with him/her.

  6. Let’s take a test. http://mathsims.education.scholastic.com Username: scholastic Password: math08

  7. Teachers access the data from SAM – Scholastic Achievement Manager. - KATYNET- Teaching & Learning- SAM Access for Educators Math Login:username – capitalletter#s password – 4Math@kisd

  8. Data • Grouping Reports • Growth Reports • Individual Student Progress Report

  9. So…let’s talk about the Quantile Framework! What is a Quantile measure?Measures: • The difficulty of a mathematical skill or concept. • The mathematical readiness or understanding level of a student for concepts and skills at his or her grade level.

  10. Quantile Framework What is a Qtaxon?mathematical topic, concept, or skill (ex. Rounding whole numbers to a give place value) included within the Quantile Framework. • There are over 500 Qtaxons aligned to one of the five strands in math. • Each Qtaxon has an assigned Quantile measure which estimates its solvability in this framework. • Qtaxons are shown by a QT in front of the content strand and skill number.

  11. Example of Knowledge Clusters Billy has a Quantile measure of 320Q. His learning frontier is 270Q to 370Q and he’s likely to be successful with instuction on the following: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-540 Qmeasure: 320Q Strand: Number and OperationsDescription: Identify combinations of fractions that make one whole. One example of an easierQtaxon on the map that he is likely to have mastered is: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-111 Qmeasure: 210Q Strand: Number and OperationsDescription: Compare and order numbers less than 10,000. One example of a more difficult Qtaxon on the map that he may need prerequisite skills in order to be successful with is: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-578 Qmeasure: 560Q Strand: Number and OperationsDescription: Use the distributive property to simplify numerical expressions.
