  4. The Works of JesusJesus—Entering the public arena Nazareth Now Then

  6. The Works of JesusJesus—Entering the public arena Replica of the Nazareth synagogue Inside a 1st century synagogue

  7. Order of Worship at Synagogue Thanksgivings (praise and prayer) proclaimed before and after the Shema (Dt. 6:4) Prayer of response by congregation (“Amen!”) Reading from the Pentateuch (in Hebrew, then translated in Aramaic) Reading from the Prophets (in Hebrew, then translated) Sermon (often by seated rabbi or distinguished visitor) Benediction 16th century Torah scroll

  8. Jesus’ Nazareth Proclamation Luke 4:16-32 Facsimile of the Great Isaiah Scroll

  9. Jesus’ Nazareth Proclamation Look at the list (from Isaiah 61): 1. The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (v.18). Remember the presence of the Holy Spirit at His baptism (3:22), temptation (4:1), and return to Galilee to begin His public ministry (4:14). 2. He anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor (v.18). Poor = meek. Preaching would be a very important activity during Jesus’ ministry.

  10. Jesus’ Nazareth Proclamation 3. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives (v.18). Spiritual, rather than physical freedom. “If the Son has made you free…” (Jn. 8:36). [Jesus adds: “To set free those who are oppressed.”] 4. And recovery of sight to the blind (v.18) Spiritual blindness is a biblical picture of not knowing God; not knowing the truth of God (Pharisee: “Are we blind too?” Jesus: “Blind as bats!” [See John 9]). 5. To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD (v.19). (OT: “year of Jubilee.” NT: Arrival of the Messiah.) Jesus does not quote the remaining fragment from Isaiah which reads, “and the day of vengeance of our God” (61:2). Why not?

  11. Jesus’ Nazareth Proclamation Their response: Wonder (v.22; [“gracious words falling from His lips”]). Doubt (v.22; [“Is this not Joseph’s son?”]). Rage (v.28; [“Seething with anger” The Message]). Why do you suppose the Jews became so angry? Jesus was making at least three statements One regarding His identity! One regarding His mission! One regarding their faith!

  14. The Works of JesusEntering the public arena Capernaum

  15. The Works of JesusEntering the public arena Matthew 4:12-17 Observations 4:14ff. Jesus is prophecy fulfilled! 4:15-16 A God is light B Jesus is God C Jesus is light 4:17 Jesus preached repentance 4:17 Jesus announced the kingdom’s presence And with authority (Lk. 4:32)!

  16. The Works of JesusHis absolute right to reign Luke 4:14-40 4:14-30 Jesus is cool. He is the promised Messiah. He deserved to be glorified (4:14). 4:29 Jesus’ over sinners. 4:33-37 Jesus’ over Satan. 4:38-40 Jesus’ over sickness.

  17. The Works of Jesus Jesus is sovereign over sinners (4:29). The calling of the disciples. The three sitter (Jn. 1) The tax collector (Mt. 2) The fishermen (Mt. 4) Your Disciples papers

  18. The Works of Jesus

  19. The Works of JesusPoint: Jesus is LORD NOW

  20. The Works of Jesus Jesus is sovereign over Satan. (Lk. 4:33-37)

  21. The Works of Jesus Mark 5 Keep a bookmark in Luke 4.

  22. The Works of Jesus

  23. The Works of Jesus They knew who He was. They knew enough to fear. A general fear of the triune God: “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder” (Js. 2:19). A specific fear of the Son of God: Demons understood clearly that Jesus could destroy (Mk. 1:24) or torment them (Mk. 5:8).

  24. The Works of Jesus “Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he said, ‘What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!’” Mark 5:6-8

  25. The Works of JesusAnother example of recognition “And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him…And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God.’” Mark 1:23-26; 3:11

  26. The Works of Jesus They knew who He was. They knew enough to fear. They were easily defeated. Remember the battle between the priests and the demon in The Exorcist. Vampire movie: “You have to believe…”

  27. The Works of Jesus Is Jesus still sovereign over Satan? Is He still sovereign over demons? “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:3,4

  28. The Works of Jesus Jesus is sovereign over sickness. Jairus’ daughter. Mk. 5:21-24; 35-43 The woman who bled for years. Mk. 5:25-34 Roman centurion. Mt. 8:5-13 Don’t waste your energy. Just say the word. The man born blind. Jn. 9:1-38

  29. The Works of Jesus “When He came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed Him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before Him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out His hand and TOUCHED the man. ‘I am willing,’ He said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately He was cured of his leprosy.” Matthew 8:2-3

  30. The Works of Jesus Question: Is Jesus still sovereign over sickness? Can I get a witness from the congregation? Is Jesus still “willing”? Go to Jesus before Advil. Go to Jesus before anti-depressants.

  31. The Works of Jesus More difficult question: What do you do when He chooses not to heal? You know that He can. What if He won’t? “Naked…blessed be the name of the LORD!”

  32. The Works of Jesus Cling to the Word. Believe the propositions and claim the promises. “You are good and do good.” Ps. 119:68 “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Rom. 8:28

  33. The Works of Jesus Jesus is sovereign over creation. Changing the water. Jn. 2:1-11 Calming the sea. Mk. 4:35-41 Walking on water. Mk. 6:45-52; Jn. 6:16-24 Feeding the thousands. Mk. 6:35-44; 8:1-13 Raising the dead. Jn. 11:1-44

  34. The Works of Jesus Jesus created creation. Genesis 1:3ff.; Hebrews 1:2 Jesus sustains creation. Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3 Jesus suspends creation order. He did miracles. He does miracles. All for God’s glory!

  35. The Works of JesusJesus’ Greatest Work--Salvation The need for perfection. Rom 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. Rom 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. The Person of perfection. “God made Him who knew no sin…” The provision of perfection. “…to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” 2 Cor. 5:21

  36. The Works of Jesus What is Jesus doing right now? Jesus’ current activities: Sustaining creation. Col. 1:17; Heb. 1:3 Building His Church. Mt. 16:18; Phil. 2:3 Growing His people. Phil. 1:6 Preparing a place for His people. Jn. 14:3 Representing His people. 1 Jn. 2:1 Interceding for His people. Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:25

  37. The Works of Jesus “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” John 21:25

  38. The Works of Jesus John 21:25 1. The ever-increasing joy of heaven consisting in the never-ending revelation of Jesus Christ. 2. Gospel selectivity. Pay close attention to everything written in the Gospels and pay extra close attention to what is repeated!

  39. The Works of JesusResponses Awe; Amazement. “Who is this that even the wind and waves obey Him?” (Mk. 4:41). “And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome withamazement” (Mk. 5:42). “About the fourth watch of the night He went out to them, walking on the lake…They were completely amazed” (Mk. 6:48, 51 [ESV: “utterly astonished”]). “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s’…And they were amazed at Him” (Mk. 12:17).

  40. The Works of JesusResponses Is it one of rage? Is it one of doubt? Is it one of fear? Is it one of awe and wonder? How are we responding today?

  49. The Words of Jesus Jesus’ ethic Mat 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Mat 5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Mat 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  50. The Words of JesusConclusion to the Sermon on the Mount • Mat 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. • Mat 7:25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. • Mat 7:26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. • Mat 7:27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." • Mat 7:28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, • Mat 7:29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
